I have El Capitan running. Seems to be the last OS I can use.
With a SSD you should be able to deploy a High Sierra. Have a look at this tool:

I'm not fond of these patch things. Thanks. El Capitan works well.

Me neither and only in a pinch. If ElCap works for you then all is fine.

Re: Apple TV vs. Mini Mac for movie viewing???

I don't live in CH anymore, but still use Kodi on ATV4. You don't jailbreak the ATV4 (Firecore not needed), but there are a few things that you need to do to make it work. Helps to be a bit handy with IT stuff. YouTube explains everything!

Not sure if anything has changed with the laws for downloading in CH, but if not, there shouldn't be a problem.

There used to be a ton of Android boxes for sale on eBay and you can probably find an ATV4 that is modded for a slight premium.

PM me if you need more info.

I have one of those Thunderbolt Displays connected to my MacMini. It's quite a nice display and I was disappointed when Apple discontinued such items. It's good to hear they may re-enter the market. As an alternative, I've found the Dell UltraSharp displays to work very well.

BTW, does anyone know if this jailbreaking and firecore stuff mentioned in an earlier post is still a viable option and acceptable in Switzerland?
