Apart from the colour screen, its not a huge upgrade from my Pebble Steel. In addition it lacks the fitness sensors of the Apple Watch and input is limited to the buttons as opposed to the Apple watch which has touch, buttons and that funky crown.
You need a device to tell you whether you are fit or not?

It used to be the case that you could just run up a flight of stairs to work out whether you were fit or not.
(Oh, you still can do it that way!)

Its a way of spurring myself towards a daily goal of 12,000 steps. If by the evening I am short, I will get off my lazy backside and go for a long walk. Its very easy to delude yourself, but cold, hard data is harder to ignore.

Apple reportedly can't launch its watch in Switzerland until December

By Jon Fingas posted Apr 04, 2015 at 7:29 PM

Here's a textbook case of irony: the Apple Watch may not have a quick launch in Switzerland... you know, the spiritual home of watches. Swiss broadcaster RTS reports that Leonard Timepieces has a trademark in the country that supposedly prevents companies from using the word "apple" in association with watches and other jewelry. The 30-year-old legal filing expires on December 5th, but that's not much consolation to Apple if it hopes to challenge the traditionalists in Geneva this year.

It's hard to say just how much a setback this is, however. We've reached out to Apple for its response, but it's notable that trademark conflicts don't usually daunt the Cupertino crew. Remember how Apple unveiled the iPhone despite the existence of Cisco's similarly named voice-over-internet phones? That dilemma didn't last long -- the two settled their legal dispute within days, and Cisco's gear quickly became a historical footnote. While this isn't the same kind of situation, it won't be surprising if Apple cuts a deal to ship the Watch in Switzerland (if one is needed in the first place) before the winter sets in.

if the news was posted 3 days earlier, it would have been a good April fool's day joke.

Now it is just a watch that is 30 years late

Re: The Smartwatch thread

Anyone know where I can get a new strap for a Samsung Gear Live?

I know I could order one through the internet, but I'd like to avoid having to fit it myself if I can avoid it.

It takes a standard 22mm strap, but all the watchsellers round here are being a bit unhelpful (sharp intake of breath, "ooh no, we can't do one of them. They're special, they are..."). The nice young lad at the mobile shop in Glarus actually put some effort into looking through their online catalogue, but to no avail.

So anywhere? Preferably in Ostschweiz or the Zurich area, but I'd be willing to travel a bit further if you know of a place that'll actually sell me a strap and fit it.

You'll have to insist that yes, it does take a standard strap. Flourish the documentation where it says so. (Previous Gears didn't, which is probably what they're thinking of.)

Alternatively, as I believe I may have mentioned this afternoon, buy me a spring bar tool (Federstegwerkzeug) and it'll take me all of five minutes.

Re: The Smartwatch thread

Update: after extensive negotiations down the local jeweler's, a new strap was procured this afternoon.

Said negotiations ran more or less like this:

(glances briefly at watch) This will have to have a special strap, we don't carry them.
Yes, it's a standard strap, 22mm. (Always say "yes" instead of "you're wrong", it confuses them.)
(reexamines watch) Oh yes, this is a standard strap. Let me just take it off and measure the width...

(making small talk while measuring)
Is the watch from here?
No, not from here.
I thought not, we don't sell any like that. Sort of like a telephone as well, is it? Wouldn't be my thing at all, find it quite ugly.
(measuring proceeds in silence)

All right, it is a standard width but the spring pins are not the usual sort and there is very little space around them. You need to get a new band from the manufacturer, I don't know if any of ours will fit.

OK, I see. That could take weeks though. Can we see if a band you sell here will fit, so that I can wear this watch in the meantime?

But it's a special band, you see, I don't have anything that will fit or look right.

That's OK with me, I want a temporary solution so I can wear the watch.

Here is a band I can try, it might fit. But it costs 34 francs. And here is another one in blue, and another one in brown, and I could order several other colors if you...

OK, let's try it. The black one please. Just as a temporary solution.

... guess what? The black leather band fits, and actually looks quite OK. Jeweler lady is pleased with herself for conceiving the ingenious idea to fit a regular band, as a temporary solution.

Android Wear works on iOS.

First smartwatch I might consider, especially since after the watch is "obsolete" you can upgrade to a proper Carrera. Good move from Tag, I'm really itching for a christmas gift to myself
