The Smartwatch thread

To date there have been quite a few turkeys in the smartwatch arena but rumours are that Apple and Google should be coming along soon to show how its done.

Samsung Galaxy Gear

The Pebble

Sony Smartwatch 2

Qualcomm Toq

Re: The Smartwatch thread

I like my Pebble.

+ does the basics well
+ goes for 5 days
+ doesn't cost the earth
+ allows me to reject calls from the mother-in-law without getting my phone out

What's not to like!!!

I quite like it too, its a true crowd sourced device. However it looks like something you would find in Claire's accessories i.e. cheap and cheerful. The Galaxy Gear and Sony both look much more premium.

have you actually seen one? They're not actually that bad. Mine's a red one, it also looks reasonable in black (I have one in the box, not opened yet!!)

The Gear looks like a dive computer to me.....

I've pored over all the videos I can find, but no I haven't seen one in the flesh. Red could actually look quirky enough to pass though.

P.S you have one for sale?

Re: The Smartwatch thread

I've not decided what to do with my black one yet.....

I personally think it looks better in real life than in the pictures. It certainly does not look like a child made it.....but I agree the Gear looks glossy and slick - but it's more than double and you'll be charging it (and only able to use it with 3 phones) before you're done getting used to it.....

Who would wear one? It's bad enough we have to carry phones around everywhere.

I would never wear a smart watch as they are in this generation... I just don't see any point in it. What real benefits does it bring? Not only does it look hideous on the wrist, but it is essentially a digital watch, with a tiny bit of Smartphone functionality, that needs recharging every 3-5 days. No thanks.

I'll stick with my traditional Swiss automatic diver that won't die when wet, and keeps going indefinitely.

The Omate Smartwatch, it raises the bar by taking a sim card

Re: The Smartwatch thread

what a smart watch needs

long battery life
decent quality screen
to notify you of all events on your phone - calls, texts, calendar events, custom
maybe limited apps
long battery life
able to tell the time on it

What a smart watch doesn't need

Sim card!
Camera
able to be used as external mic / speakers for phone
to take up your whole wrist
short batter life

What are you talking about!
Surely the main appeal of such watches is that you can look like Michael Knight when talking into your wrist...

Because we all know that the future should be more like the 80s, not less...

Re: The Smartwatch thread

Smart watches are distinctly different from watch phones. The latter usually have primitive OS that only enable you to make and receive calls/texts. However I agree the watch doesn't need telephony, but it does need to sip data from your phone, wifi etc.. to keep widgets alive and updated. Some sort of low power display and kinetic charging (like Seiko) together with wireless charging should address the power issues.

I don't want much
