Re: Surface Pro 2

Got the chance to play with it at Microsoft this week. Personally I'm not so impressed I just don't like Windows on a tablet. But the design is pretty nice I guess.
I prefer iOS for tablets and Windows for Notebooks.

Well it is more of a tabtop so pretty unique. What attracts me to it is the fact that you can install desktop software. The pen is a nice bonus too.

Got one a couple of days ago. I absolutely love it although I'm normally a Mac guy. The battery lasts forever if you use it for normal office use, the type cover is awesome, the screen is awesome, it's insanely fast. I'd never use W8 on a normal Computer (tried that, absolutely hate it), but on the surface pro 2 it really shines. I use it as a laptop replacement 80% of the time and as a tablet the rest. If you predominantly need a tablet, look elsewhere, though.

Re: Surface Pro 2

The upcoming dell as an alternative in the same class?

Slightly cheaper and a few more config options. I have no issue with the surface, but it's not exactly comfortable to type on the train with the loose hinge.

Edit: bad link, here's a review as apparently dell doesn't like to be linked to: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2425163,00.asp

Re: Surface Pro 2

To be honest the jury is still out for me regarding the surface. To my mind what makes or breaks a tablet is software availability and in that respect the surface is lacking.

The surface pro on the other hand is a brave attempt by Microsoft to take the ultrabook to the next level, and I think it's a really cool way of having a laptop and tablet at the same time, but I feel it will really only appeal to those who are die hard Microsoft

I still think that Microsoft were too late entering the tablet market. It really doesn't matter how good the devices are when you're late to the party and everybody has bought into a different standard. If we are to consider the main reason for using the surface pro is that it's able to run the full version of MS office that's good, but only if you really need the full version of office. There are plenty of current tablet alternatives, and while they certainly don't match the feature set of office, they are pretty competent in terms of what they do and are likely to suffice for a good percentage of users.

My personal opinion is that the standard surface is a dead duck - a bit too little, way too late, and with third rate software support - insignificantly few people are going to switch to it. A lot of you may well comment about how good it actually works, and I would probably agree with with you, but you can build an effing awesome barn, with a door to absolutely die for, but if Mr Horse has already scarpered then....

The surface pro, on the other hand, certainly has a market in the professional market, but it's never going to become a consumer tablet and will remain, for the moment at least, a niche product.

Re: Surface Pro 2

I've just gotten rid of my Surface RT and I don't think I will be going back to this form factor. I much prefer a longed legged ultrabook that excels in being just that, as opposed to a Surface Pro which is neither a tablet nor a particularly good ultrabook.

the base version comes with an Atom processor - those are in no way comparable to the i5. If you up the specs on the Venue Pro to an i5 and 128gb SSD (which is the least amount you'll want), it'll be at least as expensive as the SP2 - I'm not saying the Dell is bad in anyway (although I'd probably wait for some reviews) but if you need it now, you can't really go wrong with the Surface Pro 2 at the moment. I used mine on the train from Bern to St. Gallen today and it worked very well, despite the hinge.

The difference between the RT and the Surface Pro 2 is that with the SP2 you'll get a full-fledged computer that can easily be a desktop replacement (yes, it's that fast - just check out the numerous reviews) if you hook it up to a display and a bluetooth keyboard at home or at work and it's a very good laptop in between. And if you need to read the news on Flipboard in tablet-mode in between, it'll also do that. I owned the RT and it was just as you described it: sucky as a tablet and even suckier as a laptop - but I can assure you, the Pro 2 is lightyears better than the RT. The problem with the RT was / is Windows RT and the slow processor. Unless all you do with your laptop is MS Office, the Surface RT will suck for you.

ms surface pro 2 128 GB ssd - 1099 CHF
dell venue 11 pro i5 128 GB ssd - 960 CHF

I did say slightly cheaper

The specific i5 trim is different. I don't have real data as they're not out yet, but I'd be surprised if there was a significant user-felt difference between the two.

If you pay full price, sure - I got mine for 999 from Mediamarkt and they're on sale pretty much everywhere. On November 28 you could get them for 950-ish from Interdiscount. The price difference is very small.

I can't comment on the user experience, obviously. But Microsoft optimised the s*** out of the SP2 and it's amazingly fast, even compared to similarly-speced ultra books

Re: Surface Pro 2

Surface Pro 2 cannot be compared with a normal tablets as normal tablets can't run the desktop software I want to run ie. they do not have an i5 CPU in them.

Ultrabooks are nice but keyboard comes in the way for many things. Surface pro 2 seems to be versatile, wicked and wild + has Wacom made, pressure-sensitive stylus which is important for me. I think Surface Pro 2 (not older version or RT version) is a smashing product.

Whatever reservations I had are gone after I went through this thread . Now the important question.....wait till after Christmas for better price or not?

Edit- Any reason Digitec are not stocking them?

A 13", 15" version would have been cool too. Removable battery would have been nice.

Re: Surface Pro 2

btw: if you also need a cover - I got that one:

http://shop.mediamarkt.ch/de/compute...n/idpnjhb0lh3r

slightly big for the Surface (with the type cover attached), but it looks great and it's very functional. It'll more than likely also hold the Surface with the battery-cover that'll be released in Q1 2014.

well, it's too heavy for a tablet. But if you want a tablet, you shouldn't get the SP2. It's very light for a laptop / ultrabook and it's still light enough for medium-intense tablet use. It's not light enough for reading ebooks in bed on a regular basis, though.

Re: Surface Pro 2

The thing that makes the Pro 2 pretty awesome to me is the fact that you can actually hand write on it. I mean, really. It's not bulky like a tablet PC and it is not laggy like writing on iOS. I use it to take notes and record lectures at the same time. I can print any document to onenote and scribble away. It can text search my handwriting and any picture I add and even has the option to index the content of audio / video files. You can scribble some formulas by hand and have onenote plot it. It just works and it feels really weird to say so about a windows device =)
And since it is a fully functional PC there is enough software for it, I haven't yet found anything it can't do.

Of course it is not a fancy gadget to show off with but a tool that makes my life easier. It is fast and the battery lasts for an entire school day. At home I can attach the type cover and a mouse and use it as normal laptop.

I'm quite happy and I'm not easy to please when it comes to hardware =)

Re: Surface Pro 2

The surface is a game-changer.

Within a few years, I anticipate they'll be the new laptop/business standard and apps will be up to speed/par with iOS/iPad, which will be obsolete or relegated to pure entertainment.

Companies have had to divest into having two operating systems for their IT systems to manage, this will now unify the market - back to Microsoft.

unless of course the rumours are true and Apple releases the iPad Pro next year, which will be a better-looking, lighter copy of the Surface Pro 2 :-)

The same goes for me - I usually hate most of the gadgets I buy after 24 hours or so but I have yet to find aspects of the SP2 that I dislike.

It's not much of a looker (which is one of the factors I don't care about), but it's surprisingly recognisable. I don't know how Microsoft did it, but my students immediately recognised the thing and it turned out that two of them had bought one, too (one of which is a girl, btw., so apparently the SP2 is hip enough to appeal to a female audience as well). Also, Microsoft actually is playing it too safe after the Surface / Surface Pro 1 debacle - demand is much higher this time around but supply is close to non-existent, especially for the most sensible versions (128gb and 256gb). The female student was unlucky enough to get one with a faulty power supply and Interdiscount told her they only have 17 of them left in all the shops in Switzerland combined. They're transferring one over from Zurich for her
