Whats the new UPC Cablecom Horizon AIO box like?

Anyone out there using the latest UPC Cablecom Horizon AIO box. I was speaking to UPC rep in Sihlcity the other day and she said I am eligible for an upgrade since I have been a Super Combi Power customer or equivalent for the past 3 years.

Now currently I am using the white Thompson router (in bridging mode) with an ASUS RT-66U router. I am getting a respectable 92 Mbps download with the current setup far off the advertised, pie in the sky value of 150 Mbps. I would probably wouldn't switch if I can't configure bridging on the Horizon box.

Now could I expect an improvement in speed perhaps 120 Mbps and does the new box support bridging mode ?
How about the TV picture ? I am currently using the "UPC Mediabox HD" which I received a good few years ago. HD quality is pretty lousy but I have always attributed this to heavy signal compression as opposed to the current box itself.
Any possibility in keeping perhaps the Thompson (and its activation) for the Fibre connection whilst using the Horizon box for TV/PVR ?

Any one out there got more experience than me ?

You should be easily getting 150Mbps. If you don't check you are using giabit ethernet cable and not on a wifi connection.

Yes new box has bridging. But your current box should be easily getting consistant 90% and more of the subscribed speed.I get mostly about 102% of the speed, ocassionally dropping down to about 80% on bad times of the day, but never as low as your approx 65% of speed.

Picture is excellent. You should always have excellent pic on HD. If not, suspect weak signal, bad HD cable or poor TV. I had crappy picture with a crap HD cable, it reduced the bandwidth a lot and the result was a loss of resolution.

Yes.

I've had Horizon since it was released, it is pretty good (albeit always room for improvement)
As a TV box it is better than the last one. As WiFi, it is stable but because it is next to my TV, not so good in my apartment. So I added a 2nd WiFi access point and all was well.

Horrible box. Can't stand it.

Would not have upgraded if my old one hadn't stopped working.

Thanks for confirming. I will make the upgrade now. Who knows speed might improve. BTW measurement was taken over ethernet cable rather than wireless.

Re: Whats the new UPC Cablecom Horizon AIO box like?

Mine's working ok. For a Cablecom box it's not bad but it's still crap compared to anything else.

Even changing the channels causes the GUI to stutter, sometimes jumping forward a bunch of channels, then stopping, then refusing to do anything for around 5 seconds.

The guide is awful - you can hardly see anything useful as the screen is taken up with glossy boxes which keep resizing as you move around.

I would recommend getting the digicard and using a smart TV instead (my Samsung can even record if you connect a HDD to the back of it) as the guide is excellent - a great example of fast, clear and useful design, except ... Cablecom have crippled all third party guides by not putting episode info anywhere so no "record series" will work.

The wifi works ok, although the signal range is awful (and the 5 GHz even worse than awful).

The saving grace is that since the latest firmware (I got an update two days ago) recording seems to work ok, and the hardware itself seems good - it's just that the software on it is rubbish.

Search the Cablecom forums for a huge list of faults. Even simple things (if the guide and changing channels isn't considered simple) are problematic - the power save modes are either high, medium or low. High saves nothing, medium saves a bit but the box takes 2 minutes to show a TV picture and low turns off the internet and your phone line.

Grr.

But it's still their best box

You won't get near the advertised internet speed with wireless.

I get this all day every day with data cable connected:

Thezig has become a little unpopular
Re: Whats the new UPC Cablecom Horizon AIO box like?

If you mean the black Samsung Horizon box then don't go near it. The menu's are so bad and slow to navigate around that I want to throw the piece of **** out the window.

Mine randomly deletes recordings and when playing something back you can't to a certain point you have to simply fast forward. Surely they didn't test the device before agreeing to release it.

Does anyone know if Swisscom's device is better?

I get this all day every day with data cable connected:

Hmm... even with Gigabit ethernet I get the same maximum as I do with my wireless... around 80Mbps (9.8mb/s). I can't get any faster despite theoretically being on 150Mbps and in central Zurich. Maybe Ill call up and check they havent downgraded/screwed my subscription or something.

Don't know how accurate this tester tool in reality is but if you select different server locations from the settings, the results may vary significantly depending on distance. Having said that my wireless test on iPhone shows mere 40Mbps It is freaking 2.5 times less than offered by cable company.

If your laptop connection is faster than 40Mbps, then that's not your connection limiting you, it's the hardware inside the iPhone.

Maximum gauge shows 50Mbps in which case 80% seems to be ok.

According to this source maximum achievable rate should be 150Mbps.

There is a difference between a theoretical ("up to") maximum speed, and what is achievable in real life. It all depends on the quality of your connection, and the wireless hardware inside the device. Many wireless devices can only give 40Mbps transfer rates unless they use the newer hardware standards.

FFS, my box is now constantly having audio skips, stutters and interruptions when playing either regular TV or DLNA content. I have rebooted twice and no difference.

Piece of crap.

No, that would be a significantly more minor problem than not being able to watch any content properly.

EDIT - Bizzarrely, it appears it was because I was streaming from my laptop with ethernet (Cat6) cable... now im on wireless and its fine. Twisted logic, but gues I need to iron out a few kinks with the setup.

We got the Horizon box recently. It looks better but that's all and the WiFi is terrible. If we are not in the same room as the box then we have to use the 4g on our phones. The old white router was much better.

It really is awful. Fortunately we only use it for TV and not the Internet but it is the most useless POS I have ever had the misfortune to use.
Ours only records stuff when it feels like it and half the recorded stuff is unwatchable.
I have complained numerous times and even got a couple of months subscription reimbursed due to the issues but now I've had enough and the box is being returned to them on Monday.
