Re: 108.11ac wireless routers dropping heavily in price at Media Markt

To be honest I don't mind paying for the use I get out of it.

Would you still pick the Asus DSL-AC68U over the AVM Fritz!Box 7490?

Dreambox, new image loaded and working nicely with a quad lnb setup

I can't get over those Fritzboxes looking like a piece of melted lego, I would never buy one. ASUS or Netgear all the way for me. Take the ASUS.

Point taken does look a bit like a lego brick.

Got to love Swisscom's sense of humour yes we approve a 1,200 usd router that weighs 2kg, perhaps you should install a cabinet?

I agree, the Fritzboxes used to be a head of the curve but lately they have not updated anything in their routers/modems. The same concept and tech.

having said that some would argue that the continues change of Netgear is baffling to say the least, they change the design every year now and its radical change. but at least they keep up with new tech like Asus does.

Here you go!!!
http://www.microspot.ch/msp/product/...ch-/detail.jsf

121 CHF instead of usually 170+

Read reviews it's a very good one (although I think I would prefer the ASUS RT68AC)
Back to 174CHF since yesterday evening-
The low price was only displayed for like 7 hours.
Well those who got the chance to order it have enjoyed 30% discount on a good recent router

Bit the bullet and ordered the Asus DSL-AC68U feedback when it's arrived and up/running.

They sent the wrong model? Or did you order the wrong one by mistake?

I would return it, you have a cool-off period with all the providers. If I were you, I would call them and let them know that you wanted the other one, I am sure they would send you a replacement for the cost of the post. if you are welling to pick it up then no cost at all.

Saying I would go the other route and buy a modem, do I need ADSL2+ or VDSL and how can I tell?

Check the specs of your old one, should tell you what you need.

I need to get rid of this piece of shit swisscom router no 1gb lan and drops once a day, wifi throw is terrible 2/3 solved now I need a simple vdsl modem

Seems this is Swisscom approved

I believe most VDSL modems are backwards compatible with ADSL2+ so get one which is that.

but again, you would save yourself a lot of hassle by returning the router/wifi and getting a modem/router/wifi device.

Also, note you would have to configure two devices and if you have an error or an issue, both brands/companies from whom you bought the devices would point at the other one as the point of error or issue!

Also with the modem you chose, that would almost double the amount you would have paid for the modem/router/wifi device. BTW: if you bought the Asus from digitec, I can tell you their return policy is very good and they will have no issue what so ever replacing your miss-bought device.

Good luck whatever you decide.

This router can be had for under 90 chuffs:

Wifi ac, USB 3.0, really simple installation apparently.

Good deal?

Amazon has it for 116 CHF but they will only send to a packstation in Konstanz for example.

The Netgear 6300 v2 doesn't appear to be on sale anywhere in Switzerland any more and is not even on the Netgear.ch site.

That's strange.

As well as USB 3.0 it has a dual core Processor and twice as much RAM as the v1.

So, if I go for Netgear, I have to choose between the slightly slower R6250 with USB3.0 or the R6300 v1 with USB 2.0.

a shame. i guess the crappy realtek chipset probably doesn't help.

i'm hopefully upgrading to gigabit internet in a few months and am considering router options.

it looked nice. coreboot, low power, even schematics provided!

ESF (the company behind pfSense) now has their own GBit-capable devices:
https://www.pfsense.org/products/

There's a reseller in Germany:
http://varia-store.com/index.php?cat...7&filter_id=20

If I had a reason to upgrade, I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat.
But with a 20/2 connection, it would be pretty pointless.
A bit like driving around in an SUV in downtown Zurich ;-)

Re: 108.11ac wireless routers dropping heavily in price at Media Markt

Can any one recommend a good router. The Netgear R6250 (AC1600) is such a pain with wif-fi and has got worse since the warranty expires.

I think the only reason we've stuck with it for so long is that mission critical stuff is done with a wired link mainly.

So here's what's wrong (and this seems common according to long time reviews).

5GHz drops out all the time and range is very poor.
2.4GHz drops out quite a lot (perhaps three or four times when streaming a film).
A reboot via the s/w I/F doesn't fix this. It needs a proper power cycle.
The range is rubbish (we had to buy some powerline modules).
In fact the range is so bad that we can now no longer use our extensive ethernet (except in one room) as the router needs to be in that room to give coverage anywhere.
The USB HD seems to stop regularly as well.

So, are there any real life recommendations from anyone?
I'll check reviews on line too.

We'd probably be looking for GigE, USB 3.0, 4-8 ports, dual band and good (real-life) range, preferably in a modern place with concrete.

Thanks!
