Re: Whatís App

anyone who lives near a border or who frequently traverses borders uses whatsapp a lot. its a pain its owned by facebook now they want to start gathering the data. i honestly haven't decided what to do - i don't use facebook at all - but it would be difficult to not use whatsapp just because of the sheer number of people who use it.

I don't know how it is possible to be a parent in Switzerland and not to use it. I'm using it mostly for kids-related communication: mother tongue courses for kids, birthday parties, playdates, informing teacher that the kid won't come to the lesson etc. During lockdown my daughter was exchanging videos with music teacher instead of normal piano lessons. I may have survived without WhatsApp but my life would be definitely harder, as I had to call everybody or wait for ages for people to answer my E-Mails.

I personally don't care which messenger to use, but as most of the people I need to contact are using WhatsApp I have to use it too.

It's a modern version of telephone and fax granddad, but those probably annoyed you too.

Is What's App basically just a bunch of people addicted to texting one another?

Yes, how annoying & stressful actually chatting and interacting with people you know........better to stick with messaging anonymous people on internet forums

I only use it for family and friends. Maybe 10 messages a day. We use it specifically to keep in contact with our elderly parents. It was easy to set up a tablet for them running just whatsapp. Now we can send them photos and videos of their great grandchildren. They can also ping us once in a while so we know they're still alive.

We've set up a few smaller groups that we find useful as well. Currently with our neightbours and new building go on, we've started a small group so we can exchange information and share relevant files, links etc.

I avoid groups with people I don't know. Then you do get an awful lot of crap notifications far too often as people start deviating from the group purpose and send videos of cats or proof of conspiracy theories etc.

I guess it all depends on how you use it, and how your contacts use it.

As far as privacy goes, if you've an android phone, Google have your data. If you've an I thing, apple have your data.

Same here, except I defo get more than 10 messages a day....

@Pancakes,

It's very convenient and useful once you decide you don't have to reply to every single message you get from a group for instance if nobody expects an immediate answer. I don't use FB, it's just this lately and it's enough. I'm glad I don't have to read so many e-mails tbh.

Shifting now - thus far it seems pretty similar in functionality, as you'd expect.

Nice that you can run it on an iPad, that was always an odd omission for WhatsApp.

Not sure I'll ever fully leave WhatsApp though, too many other people using it that aren't likely to move to Signal. Although stopping using Facebook Messenger was fairly painless, WhatsApp is much more pervasive.

It's incredibly useful for people who are in hospital in the U.K. so not only can they contact and speak to relatives abroad but also those in the U.K. who cannot visit their relatives in the hospital due to current restrictions.

The only thing that bugs me is that, in a group, when someone posts something remotely amusing or topical, everyone else feels the need to post a smiling, or grinning emoji (or several).

That's the point, I think it just needs a critical mass of people to make the jump though and then the snowball effect takes place. I think it was the same when Whatsapp first started out.

I'll download Signal I think, see which of my contacts is on there and contact those that are through signal alone.

This. Or a comment. No, you don't have to do that. It's like when you have face-to-face conversations irl- you don't have to talk all the time because you find a few moments of silence uncomfortable.

I've been playing with telegram and signal for a while now, both seem good - but telegram seems to have more features.

Biggest issues is getting that critical mass to shift people over...

Both WhatsApp and Signal can be used on tablets and desktops. They both require you telephone in range.

Advantage: you use a real keyboard

Disadvantage: you can use phone/video function. Only by phone

Messenger has a massive advantage here as it can be used for video/phone on any device...

Telegram is apparently only encrypted if you have a "secret" chat, otherwise not (i.e. even worse than Whatsapp).
But advantage of both Signal and Telegram is certainly that they don't belong to the conglomerate that is Facebook the Company.

What data does each app collect?

Following is the list of data that each of the three messaging apps collects from their users:

WhatsApp
Device ID
User ID
Advertising Data
Purchase History
Coarse Location
Phone Number
Email Address
Contacts
Product Interaction
Crash Data
Performance Data
Other Diagnostic Data
Payment Info
Customer Support
Product Interaction
Other User Content

Telegram
Contact Info
Contacts
User ID

Signal
None. (The only personal data Signal stores is your phone number)

Time to make that switch to Signal!

You can't use WhatsApp natively on an iPad, only the web version, which is nothing like as useful.

Signal supports almost the full range of functionality with a native app.

The problem with Messenger is that it has the same data usage conditions as Facebook, i.e. really open, and you can't put end-to-end encryption as the default.

Be careful of these claims - that list seems to be commonly quoted, but for example the WhatsApp one is demonstrably false since they do not require an email address or payment information.

I'm still not happy with the rules around WhatsApp, but also bear in mind it was originally independent then got bought by Facebook, rules can change and I'm never sure who's vested interested are being pushed...

Thatís what Iíve been doing for awhile now. Unfortunately half of my contacts are splitting between Threema and Telegram and the other half are either doing Signal or doing a combination to try to keep up with everyone. Iíve refused to download anything other than WhatsApp and Signal. Iíll keep WhatsApp as long as my American family members stay on thereóitís the same thing keeping me on Facebook, the one or two important people who canít or wonít switch and if I were in the US I would just call them from time to time but since Iím here ...
