After a short flurry of contacts shifting to Signal and/or Telegraph, it‘s all died a death and WhatsApp is steaming on a well as ever...

had it only for kids and school and since they moved on - I am happyto live without it again - never been on FB so no issues there . I still have phone & number ...so anyone that has anything to say still be able - Whatsup was all about 'non essential chatter' so "c'est la vie"

Whatsapp will come out with new T&C as of May 15. If you don't agree, your account will become inactive. It all has to do with Facebook and data sharing.
I think I'll still agree to the new T&C despite the data sharing. Whatsapp is still too popular to disregard it. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-56154543 |

Deleted WA a while ago and survive well without it 😀
Also deleted Insta, as I forgot to check that anyway.
Majority of my friends are now on Signal and some on Threema. I know, I share already a lot of information but I just do not like the amount of data they want to grab (and thinking of chucking FB as well)

I'd like to settle for a second app and have downloaded Signal. Having said that, many Swiss prefer Threema simply because it's Swiss and feels safer. Isn't Threema the app of choice for terrorists?

But actually, this is cheekier: If you don't resign (before you delete the app!!) before May 15th they will keep your data for ever while blocking you from changing it. These people are gooooood at what they're doing, I must admit.
<<Whatsapp is still too popular to disregard it.>>
Funny. What's app is a tool. Not a community. You're afraid your friends will forget you if they don't see your name in it?
Almost all my people changed to Signal, Telegram or threema. Two of them in fact only because of me (yes, I feel duly flattered ) and the few that have not yet either will when they need me and they realize I meant it when I said I'm off whatsapp or call me the "old fashioned way", my number is an official telephone connection after all.
Fun factor: I'm not and have never been on facebook, I have a lot less to worry about than those who are. On the other hand if one wants to be part of everything and anything, this sharing-info-avidity is actually useful? One releases the info once and it's all over the planet.

And if your circle of friends and family happen to use that tool, then it makes it complicated to abandon it.
To be honest, I prefer having 1 communication tool, rather than having 3 different ones, less things to worry about.
One must be naive to think that her/his personal data are not being exploited, anonymously or not, as long as she/he uses credit cards, search engines, social media, messaging apps etc.

But it should be taken and then just deal with the consequences (either way).
As to the bold bit, I mentioned that in an other thread tonight too. |

It's still end to end encryption. That hasn't changed. Unlike signal it doesn't hoover up your contact information.
I'm reminded of the late 90s. 10 different messaging apps. So you end up with apps that frontended them all. I guess that'll happen again.

So what exactly is the new T&C compared to as is? I hear a lot of noise, but difficult to see the facts? FB account cancelled years ago.

It hoovers up your contacts details and tells all your contacts with signal that you've joined. Whether you like it or not. https://www.howtogeek.com/708697/how...contacts-join/
I know people won FB who've switch from whatsapp because they're so worried about personal information. Yet they maintain their FB profile.
