BBC3 - Snog, Marry or Avoid?

They've snogged it, but have refused to marry it, and now the Beeb are going to avoid BBC3.

Bosses have confirmed that BBC3 is going to be axed as part of cost cutting measures. It is supposed, however, to remain available online.

Despite a lot of tat, it was also responsible for spawning some good programs, especially in the comedy genre - of which Gavin and Stacey was probably the most widely known and successful.

Also good, extensive coverage of the UK summer festival season.

BBC4 to remain - lets hope that ditches some of the repeats and fosters some of BBC3's better offerings.

Still has to be approved by the BBC Trust though. And what will they name BBC Four once Three is online only? 1, 2 and 4 will look at bit odd in the TV listings without a 3 there.

Re: BBC3 - Snog, Marry or Avoid?

Given how much everything else costs, am amazed how 'cheap' BBC4 is.

Plus, considering I never watch BBC1 (unless the 6 Nations/World Cup is on), how on earth does it cost that much to run, Bruce Forsyth's wigs can't cost that much surely?

If I was still paying the Licence Fee, I would be outraged.

BBC TV channel budgets 2013/14
  • BBC One: £1,051m
  • BBC Two: £415m
  • BBC Three: £85m
  • BBC Four: £49m
  • CBBC: £79m
  • CBeebies: £29m
  • BBC News Channel: £53m
  • BBC Parliament: £2m
Taken from here.

Re: BBC3 - Snog, Marry or Avoid?

Well, they can drop the Parliament channel for a start. I can't imagine anyone watches that rubbish. The few times I've inadvertently tuned in, the chamber is either nearly empty and someone is droning on and on or it's like PM's Question Time and they're all shouting their heads off at once. It's enough to put you off democracy for life.

Re: BBC3 - Snog, Marry or Avoid?

Apparently, moving BBC3 to online will save £50 million a year. £30 million of that will be transferred to BBC1 drama

Given their main argument is to appeal to teenagers it seems the BBC actually are making the right move to shift it online. Regular TV and satellite will be a old technology soon

Re: BBC3 - Snog, Marry or Avoid?

I quite like BBC3 and BBC4. What I enjoy on BBC4 are the concerts and bios of aging rock stars etc and some of the unseen footage of festivals. I would rather they got rid of some of their radio channels and kept both.

Not really surprising with C. Patten being chairman of the trust. Enough said.

Me too, although I watch mostly 2 and 4. Hopefully, as TiMow suggested in the first post, they will relocate the better offerings from BBC3 to BBC4 - the latter is very good but a bit of livening up would not hurt.

Or possibly Little Britain, but point taken.

Would that not be the same content, simply condensed down into time slots that people want?

I personally think people are being a bit premature when they say that broadcast television is dead. That may be the case in a few years time, but don't underestimate the laziness of the general public who are both internet literate, and are also willing to be spoon-fed telly in a way that does not necessarily suit them, but will just sit there anyway.

They did, ad nauseum, but obviously not any longer.
It was however very easy to avoid them if you weren't interested in watching them by not turning to that channel obviously.

Repeat of Top Gear or A.N.Other reality TV show? Or choosing a home show? Or baking a cake, decorating a room, throwing a pot, former "celebrity" dancing/diving/driving show? Or a soap about poor people with lives full of ridiculous/unlikely events? Or a repeat of 1 of the 2 latest US comedy programmes?

Words which I now only heard in the corridors of Netflix/Amazon/HBO/Showtime - ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING!
