Re: Order Kindle from Amazon.de - costs?

Paperwhite Kindle, does any know if they are back-lit? I really don't want another device that shines in my eyes while reading.

It is backlit, but not glaringly so. I can read in the dark quite comfortably, which is the main reason I bought it (and the touch screen, of course).

Under German law, if you order online, you can return any item within 10 days, and reclaim all the costs.
Amazon will let you return it and refund.

But DHL and their customs-related costs are a different story - and that part of the story doesn´t fall under German consumer law.

My order was delivered on the 4th and I got the DHL invoice between April 15th and 17th (I was away on those days so I'm not sure).

Re: Order Kindle from Amazon.de - costs?

So this is how it's going.

Sent an email to DHL last week. They answered yesterday telling me that Amazon forgot to mention on the package the Duty paid code or something like that and they asked ME to send Amazon a form to be filled and returned to DHL.

Contacted Amazon DE. On the phone I asked the representative if she was speaking english. She was. PERFECTLY. But she was not allowed to speak to a customer in English because according to Amazon she was not qualified enough.
There were no English-speaking reps, so I had to send an email explaining the situation.

1st reply from Amazon

Quote:
Good day Marcello,

Thank you so much for your e-mail which I received earlier.

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience caused.

After enquiring your case, I realised that the import fee charged is not related to the VAT that has to be paid according to Swiss regulations. Customs sometimes charge a fee if the item is not free for import but the VAT has always to be paid according to law. As this is an international delivery, Amazon did not charge VAT in advance, therefore it should be borne by the customer, if required.

Please contact DHL for further information as from Amazon side all necessary documents were delivered.
Obviously this lady had no idea what she was talking about.

So I called Amazon again. The lady who answered could not speak properly english but guess what - she was authorised to speak in English to customers. I wonder who's in charge of deciding that sort of stuff. She asked me to send an email attaching the DHL bill.

So I sent everything. My order, my Amazon invoice and my DHL invoice.

This is the reply I got tonight.

Quote:
Dear Marcello

Thank you for contacting Amazon.de.

As you might know, orders that are shipped to countries outside of Germany may be subject to import taxes, customs duties and fees levied by the destination country ("Import Fees" - "Importgebühren"). For your convenience, when we use International Express Shipping to eligible countries, Amazon EU Sarl will estimate and collect an Import Fees Deposit, and such funds will be used by the carrier to pay the Import Fees on your behalf (or on the recipient's behalf) to the appropriate authorities of the destination country.

You can see the amount of the deposit at the end of the order process on the order form.

Here is some more information regarding prepayment of import duties.

I hope this information has been helpful to you.

*****
WHICH PRODUCTS DOES THE IMPORT FEES DEPOSIT APPLY TO?
...

*****
WHERE CAN I FIND MORE INFORMATION?
For detailed information please visit our Help pages:
http://www.amazon.de/gp/help/custome...200198570#zoll
So this guy did not bother to read my email since he answers as if he thought I was making a general enquiry about the Advance deposit.

Anyway, the link at the bottom provided some useful info, which I quote:

Quote:
What if the actual Import Fees are more than the Import Fees Deposit I was charged?

You will not be charged any additional fees if the actual Import Fees exceed the Import Fees Deposit we estimated.
I answered again, frustrated. But I'm afraid it's far from over... On Monday I will have a german-speaking friend writing to them...
If anybody has any suggestions, they are welcome!

I have been a heavy iPad user since the first generation. I read plenty of books on it, but the experience (as I imagine you well know) is not very eye-friendly.

After I turned on my Kindle for the first time, I wondered why I never bought one sooner. It's simply something else. And reading in the dark does not cause any eye strain at all.

Re: Order Kindle from Amazon.de - costs?

Ok, I just got a call from Amazon Germany.

This new person (the 5th or 6th) investigated properly (finally) and confirmed that he has no idea why I got the bill from DHL. He said that it might have something to do with the order being dispatched from the UK for stock reasons.
Anyway, they will refund me the DHL bill (33 CHF) to settle it.

He also reaffirmed that when you pay the import deposit to Amazon (when you choose the two-day shipping with courier) you are not supposed to pay anything else.
So, since DHL charges a flat fee of 22.5 CHF per import (+ the order VAT), it is more convenient to choose courier and to pay Amazon (in my Case I paid 30 Euros for shipping and Import). While 30 EUR is more than 33 CHF, you get the package two days after the order instead of a week.

Thank you for the updates. It will help others. I ordered mine by post, took a week or so and now I am wondering if there is another bill to follow

No bill. With standard post you either pay duties to the postman at delivery, or you collect the package at the Post Office (paying at the counter).

Oh, then I paid 97.28 Euros all together. That is way cheaper than here in the UK.

Then you can expect to pay VAT and a nice CHF 16 processing fee (thieves!).

The major screwup I experienced was because I chose DHL and Amazon makes you pay in advance for the import duties.

When you selected standard shipping, you probably did not prepay the import fees (and I don't think you can with the post).
In that case, the Swiss Post will take care of the customs. It's pretty normal when receiving a package from abroad.
Ultimately it will be up to the Swiss Customs office to decide if it should be processed or not. Sometimes you get away with it, but most of the times not.
The post does not send any bills afterwards. If your item is subject to an import duty, you pay at delivery (which by the way drives me crazy because my wife orders plenty of stuff from abroad and never tells me - since I prefer plastic to cash I never have a lot of cash on me when the postman shows up unexpectedly!).

Ah, then I guess nothing more to pay as the item has already been delivered. I did pay some import fees -

Zwischensumme: EUR 83,19
Verpackung und Versand: EUR 6,64
Vorauszahlung der Importgebühr: EUR 7,45
Endbetrag: EUR 97,28
Gewählte Zahlungsart: Mastercard

Re: Order Kindle from Amazon.de - costs?

amazon.de is celebrating Kindle's 5 years. Kindle Paperwhite is 20 EUR off. Regular is 10 off.

Total price shipped to Switzerland comes down to EUR 90.75 for the Kindle Paperwhite with "special offers" and 108.90 without.

I've got a 2011 Kindle (low-res, no touch screen, no light) and I'm rather tempted by this offer.

Re: Order Kindle from Amazon.de - costs?

Hello all!

I realize this is an old thread, but I find it's annoying when folks start up a brand new thread for basically the same topic... so here goes. I'm brand new to Switzerland, so please excuse any newbie ignorance.

I'm curious if any of the customs and/or immigration fees are more expensive based on size or weight of your item...? I'm looking at purchasing a Kitchenaid mixer, and it looks like it can be shipped here to Switzerland with Amazon.de.

Here's what I'm seeing thus far:

Basic price to buy on Amazon.de and send to Germany: 424.99 Euros, free shipping.

Price in Euros to send to Switzerland: 357.14 euros + 31.12 import fees deposit. Total 388.26 euros. I choose Amazon Global Switzerland, 4-7 day delivery.

At first glance, seems about 35 euros cheaper this way, but from what I understand in the tread, I may have some charges to pay at delivery (since I choose the longer delivery option).

Now, a Kitchenaid mixer is no small or light object. Just wondering if I will see a big surprise in the fees when it's delivered. Anyone with experience in ordering larger/heavier objects from Amazon.de?

Thanks in advance!
