What does this mean? Well, I can effectively watch Sky anywhere in the house; I can also watch the channels from the Dreambox anywhere in the house (and even over my network using VLC).

Re: Your Review: Set-Top Box solutions

Hi,

so one said that Cablecom and Swisscom are charging people for channels that are free on the satellite. However, there is a big difference those channels are aimed for the uk but the footprint of the satellite signel means that people with satellite dishes outside the uk can also see them even though the broadcasters do not really have rights to broadcast the programmes to the rest of europe. It is a grey area but as an individual the chances of being taken to court are zero.

However, if cablecom or swisscom decide to show those channels they have to negotiate with the broadcasters to allow them to rebroadcast their content in Switzerland. For example, the lack of BBC 1 on Bluewin tv may well be because they could not secure the broadcast rights.

Re: Your Review: Set-Top Box solutions

I thought I would bump this thread now that more people perhaps have Bluewin TV and other solutions......

and also to highlight that searches on "cablecom dreambox" point to this thread as number one hit.

So I have to say this:
This forum is not a source of ways to
bypass the encryption that cablecom has in place

Re: Your Review: Set-Top Box solutions

BLUEWIN TV:

29 Fr / month

Order to install was about 3 weeks (they are still swamped by orders, it's expected to normalize in a couple months).
Installation was pretty much plug-n-play. I got a new ADSL modem - it's now VDSL. Plugged everything into its place, then had to wait for about 5-10 minutes for several firmware upgrades to happen automatically. And that was it. All the channels are in place, I have EPG (program guide) where I can also select programs to be recorded. (Either one-off, or specific series.)
I love the PAUSE feature while watching TV!
As for english programs, you get BBC2..4, ITV1..4, "Film4", CNN, CNBC (Jay and Conan are back!), etc...
Some swiss channels still offer dual language, so just like on a stereo TV, you can select which audio you want. Most US series have english as an option.
There is VOD (video on demand) and a nice catalogue of movies you can watch any time for 3.50 a pop. Last time I checked they were all dubbed german but I heard multi-audio is in the works.

While there are no HDTV channels on BWTV it is only a matter of time before they come, could be any day I guess?
Anyway, the box is full HDTV capable with HDMI plug on the back. In fact my menu system is now in 720p. You also have optical out as some movies have dolby digital audio.

Image quality is just still not as good as analog TV but I've noticed it improved recently. I guess they are working on it constantly. It's still a new product.

One thing I noticed, my VDSL connection speed is now at 8000 down / 1200 up. The modem has QoS meaning TV stream gets priority (needs 3-4000 down) but anyhow, surfing speed has improved a lot! Especially upstream which is great when emailing large files for example.

Oh, they did not charge for the set top box and for the modem! (which is a decent 802.11G WiFi router by the way; the package even includes a USB wifi card)

Re: Your Review: Set-Top Box solutions

I ordered a second (Pace) digibox through Insat International London and it came by DHL or similar NEXT DAY together with the adapter for my existing Sky aerial. Sky card for free-to-air channels was included and I did not have to give a UK adress for registration. Looks like receiving UK Sky is now legitimate in Europe ! Used a local TV service for installation and the total cost was much less than the local ex-pat middleman was asking.

either get Teleclub / Premiere via satellite or wait until summer when Cablecom will start offering HD-channels. Bluewin originally announced that they'd launch HD-channels this summer as well, but yesterday in "Kassensturz" the Bluewin rep said something about a 1-2 years delay.

They just canceled Conan again and Leno has been reduced to a 30-minute format lacking most of the funny parts.

>There is VOD (video on demand) and a nice catalogue of movies you can >watch any time for 3.50 a pop. Last time I checked they were all dubbed >german but I heard multi-audio is in the works.

nope, they abandoned that idea when they found out it would be too expensive to license additional languages.

>While there are no HDTV channels on BWTV it is only a matter of time >before they come, could be any day I guess?

originally announced for this summer, HD has been postponed drastically (by 1-2 years)

I noticed that, too - thought it was only my imagination

Ooops, say goodbye to HD. The minimum requirement will be 16'000 down but they might decide to even require 25'000 down.

do you have a source which says that cablecom will offer hd in the summer? if you google it, you will find the CEO of cablecom quoting how we will all be watching Euro 2006 in HD with them .

ha. ha.

as for your ps3, are you happy with it and blu ray? how about a small review of that!! somehow, thats not the same as having HDTV reception though is it.

another word of warning. i heard that the ps3 downscales hd to 480p unless you have a 1080 panel. any truth in that??

Re: Your Review: Set-Top Box solutions

>do you have a source which says that cablecom will offer hd in the

There was a press-release shortly after Bluewin TV was launched. I didn't find the original release anymore but several sites that quote it (this one, for example:

http://www.itreseller.ch/news/nw_sin...id=26302&sid=0)

>as for your ps3, are you happy with it and blu ray? how about a small
>review of that!!

Yeah, very happy with it. I might do a review but I've only had the PS3 for a couple of days, so that's a bit early.

I also had HD-DVD (via an Xbox 360 that I just sold because I was p****d off by Microsoft because of their announcement of the new HDMI-ready version of the Xbox 360) before. The picture quality is about the same, after some tuning. The standard PS3 output is oversaturated in my opinion.
The bad thing about Blu-Ray discs is the stupid region code they come with. HD-DVDs are code-free. On the other hand, PS3 games are code-free while Xbox 360 games are region-coded. It's a total mess.

>another word of warning. i heard that the ps3 downscales hd to 480p >unless you have a 1080 panel. any truth in that??

well, that's primarily a problem with the Blu-Ray format. Blu-Ray movies support two formats right now: 480p and 1080p. The PS3 isn't able to scale pictures (in any direction, for that matter *) but it will interlace.
If your TV is 1080i capable, which is the case with 99.9% of all HD-Ready TVs sold today, then you'll get 1080i - which is slightly worse than 1080p but depending on the size of your panel you probably wouldn't even notice the difference.

If, however, your TV can only output 720p, you're indeed out of luck. As the PS3 isn't capable of scaling, you only get the 480p image available on your Blu-Ray disc. 720p isn't available on today's Blu-ray discs.

Scaling, however, is planned for a future PS3 software release.

regards,

dakis

* The PS3 won't "upscale" either - that is, it won't display normale DVDs in HD-resolution. The Xbox 360 is able to fully scale to any format but isn't able to output 1080p - it only goes up to 1080i. Also, it's insanely loud (I had one, I know what I'm talking about) and therefore not very well suited for movie watching.

Hello Cablecom will release a HDTV Receiver in June 2007 followed by a recorder in Sept 2007 if everything goes to plan. Seeing as it rarely does expect both to come out within a short time of each other say August and September...

i can find no information to corroborate the statement that cablecom are intending to firmly offer HDTV of any kind in the timeframe that Richard has suggested.

i would be happy to be contradicted!!

the document suggests indeed that cablecom intend to offer hdtv solutions in the second half of this year.

lets see, shall we!

unfortunately i remember them saying in january 2006 that they wanted to offer hdtv by summer 2006 also.
