laptops on kijiji?

Hi,
I am trying to buy a used laptop as inexpensively as possible without being stolen. Is Kijiji as bad as Craig's List as far as the proportion of stolen goods? I see one that suits my needs but they have posted the same variety of things in multiple cities and are asking for euros.

Re: laptops on kijiji?

Laptops are as cheap as chips these days, so its really not worth going second hand unless its an amazing deal and the machine is still in warranty (with proof of purchase and ownership).

Here is a half price 15.6" Packard Bell which will do most things you throw at it, brand new (2 year warranty) for only CHF 333

Re: laptops on kijiji?

I don't know how many people buy new laptops because the old one is too slow or otherwise outdated.

We've needed about 6 or 7 in the last 7 years (Macs and PCs) and they've all been replaced as they have developed faults.
These faults are usually intermittent at first and then terminal.

I'd never buy a second--hand laptop unless it was cheap-as-chips and something for my kids to play with.

Desktop PCs and monitors are a better bet second-hand as they generally last much longer for various reasons.

The main reason is that they are modular, so if the graphic card, CPU, Power Supply Unit etc.. goes pop, you can replace/upgrade.

Re: laptops on kijiji?

I've bought already three second hand enterprise class laptops here: http://www.benno-shop.ch/ (found them first in Ricardo). They are refurbished and come with original Windows license (although it is German, there are several tutorials online on how to change to your favourite language). The price is usually very good.

So far, very happy with them.

PS: I'm not affiliated with the site!

I bought a second hand MacBook off ricardo in 2009 - it was used for one (!) project of a web design agency in ZH for about three weeks and I was able to pick it up for a steal... (I had the feeling the client was billed for it and the ricardo deal filled up the agencies beer money). I have it now for 5 years and it still works without fault.

Actually I was thinking more that the miniaturisation required in laptops is not necessary in PCs etc so you don't get the fragility of flexible-boards, micro-connectors etc and nor do you get the overheating/stressing of components caused by the miniaturisation.
Then there's the human factor - laptops tend to get bumped and knocked more than desktops.

Of course, as you say, if something does go wrong on a desktop then you can usually replace just that component.

Of course, there are exceptions with laptops but it is a bit of a gamble.

Re: laptops on kijiji?

OK, thanks all. I'm back to Mac rather than Windows so that drives up the price a good deal.
I'll take a look at the sites suggested above.

Re: laptops on kijiji?

You are aware of shipments from Germany being subject to Swiss VAT charges ? Unless your brand new Apple laptop is priced below 65 CHF you will pay 8% VAT plus a handling fee charged by DHL or whoever handles the shipment/VAT payment.
