Internet for FREE (for everyone, provider Cablecom)

Since January 2013, Internet in Zurich is free for everyone as long as it is provided by Cablecom.

The only thing you have to do is cancelling your current contract and tell them you want the free option. Your current contract usually has a minimum period.
Of course they try to sell you some cheap options, and they try to explain that WLAN is not working with this option etc. You'll need some time to convince the call center agent that you really want ;-)

The only limitation is the speed of course: it's 2MB/Sec down and 0.2MB/Sec up.

I am using it for a couple of month now and it works fine. The offered bandwith is even ok for youtube. Of course, huge uploads will not work (or very slow). If you are not a heavy user, this option might suit :-)

No. And neither do they. Cablecom, like the rest of us, call free "free". Free. Free.

Free it is not.

You pay a one-off charge for the modem
You pay a monthly charge for the cable connection - either directly, or included in your Nebenkosten

"Free" in this case would be better described as "No extra monthly charges"

well yes, if you don't have TV, then that's correct. I don't know anybody who doesn't. So, the 28.40 you pay anyway, and that's included in your montly rent. And the other providers charge you for internet, on top of the 28.40. So I think it's a nice give away for everyone who pays for TV anyway.

By the way, if you don't want to pay for TV, then you pay a charge for sealing the wall outlets...

But let's try not to be narrow minded, it's a good offer (compared to other providers), and for everyone who thinks 2 MBit is enough it's a nice chance to save some money

And TV/radio tax
Yes, and soon this tax will probabely apply to every household. The arguments are:
-everyone has at least a tv or watches tv on a computer
-everyone listens to radio (computer, car radio, receiver at home etc.)
-everyone benefits from these public services in one way or another
-saving the money they have to pay to Billag for the billing

But hey, at least we don't have 15 mins. ads every 20 mins. in a movie as the private stations have :-)

Re: Internet for FREE in Zurich (for everyone, provider Cablecom)

2/0.2 barely passes muster as an internet connection these days, but I can see a use for it as a backup connection if your main one is with another provider.

What's caught my eye is the 300/300 fibre now being offered in Basel (they're digging up the road and laying the fibre outside my apartment right now). Very tempting but quite pricey at SFr. 259.

Re: Internet for FREE in Zurich (for everyone, provider Cablecom)

I've been using Cablecom's "free" Internet since early this year and I agree with the OP. For my and my family's everyday use, it's all right. I thoght streaming video wouldn't work at all, but it does.

Before that I had Swisscom DSL Standard which supposedly offered 10 Mbps, but I actually got only half that.

So instead of getting 5 Mb for 49.-/month, I now get 2 Mb for 0.

Now if you want something a little faster, UPC Cablecom also offers 5 Mb for 10.-/month. However this offer is not in its website-- you have to call them.

Re: Internet for FREE in Zurich (for everyone, provider Cablecom)

That's just great.

I have been having a cablecom package with phone/TV/Internet for 69 a month.
I don't use the phone, only mobile.
I don't watch TV but was told by cablecom I need TV to have internet. Found out this week when receiving Nebenkost breakdown that TV is included in the building (BY Fing CABLECOM). You'd think they would have had the decency to tell me that they provided cable for the whole building when I had to give my address for them to check availablity in my area...

Now you are telling me that I could have internet for free!!???

I am canceling this damn contract first chance I get.

Cheers!

That's true, sort of.

To get Internet from Cablecom you need at least the "Basic digital offer", which comprises the basic TV range of channels and 2Mb Internet:

I don't have a TV (I download what I want to view, when I want to view it). Thus I also canceled the whole Cablecom subscription, which reduced my Nebenkosten.
But: my employer pays for 20/2, I only pay for the POTS-line.

If you pay for 10Mbit, but only get 5, there is a problem (equipment, cabling, whatever) that needs to be fixed. Open a support-request with your provider in that case until it's fixed.

Re: Internet for FREE in Zurich (for everyone, provider Cablecom)

This isn't just Zurich, it's everywhere.

If you have a working Cablecom connection in your flat/house then you're being billed just under 30CHF/month for it, either in your Nebenkosten or, more rarely, directly.

That socket gives you access to a bunch of TV stations, radio stations and 2Mb/s internet.

To use the TV or radio, simply connect a coax cable to it.

To use the intenet you'll need to connect a cable modem (or combined modem/router) to it. You may (I don't know) need to tell cablecom you've done this so they can activate the MAC address of your modem. You may even need to use their own modem.

So it's not free, as you're paying the monthly socket rental, but many people don't realise that it gives internet (albeit not so fast) along with TV and radio.

The 49.- activation fee includes the modem (in my case, a Ubee EVM3230).

Re: Internet for FREE in Zurich (for everyone, provider Cablecom)

Someone on another thread has mentioned fees in the Geneva area for having Cablecom sockets blocked, but that post just links to another website with someone else's random opinion.

My understanding is that you're correct, omtatsat. There's no fee to getting Cablecom to block off the socket. There is a fee, however, if you ask to unblock it again within 6 months (or 12, I dunno).

I had to pay 50 CHF to block Cablecom at my first flat - they sockets were actually sealed.
At the 2nd flat, I paid nothing.
But no seal.
