Possible iCloud breach in news today

In todays papers (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/cele...A-listers.html) seems a hacker has got hold of data off iCloud and is using it for publicity, money making etc.

If it was just one celebrity you could point to the end user security as the probable source, but it seems to be across many people from one location, which would mean it must have been fished from icloud directly.

Will be interesting to see how it develops.

Re: Possible iCloud breach in news today

From the get-go, cloud storage has been much too nebulous for my liking which is why I don't and won't use it for even mundane data storage purposes.

Re: Possible iCloud breach in news today

"The Fappening", as it was aptly named in the 4chan board (a forum more or less like EF) that leaked the images, is likely a bit more than an iCloud breach.

What got leaked was a collection of various pics, probably collected by various people sometimes over several years.
It seems to be a closely knit community, normally, and you can't get "in" unless you have a new picture to share.
A lot of these photos were probably taken before the last few "celeb-photo" leaks - hopefully, people have woken up now.

I must say, I have little sympathy for these people.
Why did they photograph their own genitalia? With, of all things, an internet-connected mobile phone, the epitome of insecurity?

Why did they allow a friend or husband to film while (or, in the case of Ms Lawrence, also after) they had sex?

Maybe people should do some serious soul-searching and ask themselves if they couldn't cut back on the narcism a bit.

That said, some of the photos are harmless, or "soft core" at best. Nothing to be ashamed of - if only a bit too heavy on the narcissistic side.

So some people took their clothes off. They had sex.

Who cares?

Re: Possible iCloud breach in news today

Yeah, my first thought too on learning about this via articles on my FB stream was so what, who cares?

It will probably boost, at least for a short while, the ailing careers of some of the so called celebs in question.

As for narcissism, well smartphone technology has made everyone a star these days!

I think the whole point of this leak is that it is not another Kardashian sex tape, but pictures of models and actresses who really do not need sex scandals to boost their careers. I do not see how Jennifer Lawrence could possibly benefit from those...

Rubbish passwords are exactly that. Rubbish security settings are also just that.

It's probably something like this: http://www.wired.com/2008/09/palin-e-mail-ha/

Quote:
...the Palin hack didnít require any real skill. Instead, the hacker simply reset Palinís password using her birthdate, ZIP code and information about where she met her spouse ó the security question on her Yahoo account, which was answered (Wasilla High) by a simple Google search

The operative word was "some", Hence my use of it...

I doubt all those affected are even listed celebrities nor at the top of their game career wise.

Anyway, who cares?

Re: Possible iCloud breach in news today

I find it slightly amusing that THIS event has sparked more public interest in personal security and privacy, rather than the NSA, TSA, other spying agencies.

We must all be aware of the electronic trail we leave behind, and it's a sad state of humanity when visualizing the human body is the event that has scared the most into being a bit more responsible with their online activities.

I have zero sympathy for people that do this. If you're under the age of 40, you pretty much know that once it's on the Interwebz, it's there forever, and pretty much any picture you take will end up on the web.

Really? I can fully understand that naked pics of Jennifer Lawrence raise more interest in the public than the NSA hacking Angela Merkels private mobile phone (the office one is secured...). I'd go so far to say that I really don't want to see what photos they found on it.

I have some sympathy, these were secure back ups of photos taken on the phone. It's not inconceivable for some people to think that if they delete the photos from their phones (after they've had a good giggle) they will be gone forever.

To be sure, these people have done nothing wrong, goofing around with your partner shouldn't result in this form of medieval, ritual shaming.

Oh definitely never questioned it being this way, I totally understand as well. I was more commenting on direct insight it gives on 'first world problems' and priorities.

If World Hunger, Global warming, and Peace in the Middle East were directly dependant on twitter being online, a group of 13 years olds would have solved them in a fortnight :P

On an amusing note. Imagine going back 15 years (1999) and telling someone that "Somebody hacked my phone selfies from the cloud".

Re: Possible iCloud breach in news today

I'm kinda surprised by the 'blame the victim' mentality shown in this case.

The victims were hacked and their privacy invaded. IMO, from a moral point of view, no different to the case had someone broken into their homes and installed a spycam.

Hopefully as time goes on, people will in general be less prudish and such events will no longer be newsworthy. I can imagine that being the case with more and more people taking selfies, I expect such naked selfies to be pretty commonplace and unexceptional eventually.
