Billag - Moving out

Does anybody know where I can get reliable information about the disconnection at Billag ?
The Billag customer service seems to be a little bit busy these days so my attempts have been taking years to be picked up

Re: Billag - Moving out

If you are moving abroad, you can do your deregistration with Billag after the fact. You simply need to visit their website and upload a copy of your cantonal deregistration certificate and they'll backdate the refund.

In my case, I sent an email on their website and received the paperwork asking for my bank details about two weeks later. They then promised to refund my remaining balance within 30 days.

From https://www.billag.ch/private/faq/:

I have been living abroad for a while and forgot to deregister. Can I deregister retroactively?

To deregister retroactively, you need to send us official confirmation of your deregistration from your local authority. You can send it to us in the form of a PDF through our contact form.

Billag HQ is just north of Fribourg main station, why not visit them?

I was told by their rep. to send an e-mail with my info and then to expect a written confirmation in my mail soon.
Hopefully I will get this before the end of the month otherwise they will have to look for me in Rio !

Thank you BTW !

Re: Billag - Moving out

Looks like we will need to claim a refund. We left Switzerland earlier this year and de-registered at the Gemeinde. I had only paid the Billag via a direct payment, so imagine my surprise that not only have they continued to charge me, they have taken it directly out of my bank account without (as far as I know) me telling them they could do so.

So much for doing the right thing.

Re: Billag - Moving out

Billag was very easy to cancel. I called them and they did it over the phone. No registered letter was needed.

Re: Billag - Moving out

Hi,

I just received a letter from Billag asking me to register in their website (in order to start invoicing me, I assume). The fact is that I will be moving out of this apartment on April 30th, so I was wondering how Billag works. Do I have to pay an annual fee and then it doesn't matter where I'm living, or I have to pay in this apartment only to be billed again in the new apartment ?

Many thanks in advance!

Maria

Ignore the letter and do it when you are in the new address.

Billag stops when YOU notify them.

The Gemeinde doesn't tell Billag anything.
It's up to you to cancel the Billag charges.

I know of some cases where a person changed addresses, forgot to tell Billag to cancel the old address, did however properly sign up for the new address and ended up having to double-pay for two addresses up to date of receipt of cancellation notice for the old address.

So send of a cancellation letter pronto.

... and take the risk of being fined by Billag if they discover that a previous registration should have taken place.

It's quite simple in Switzerland:

You listen to the radio. You watch TV. You pay Billag.

In order to not create chaos, keep your address with them current.

There is no need to register with Billag unless you "consume" one of the services they do the fee handling for.

If you consume and do not register, and if Billag notices - pay time. Also for the past. I am not sure about penalties, would make sense, though

That vote only drives to change the economics - the general rules and requirement to pay will remain.

Re: Billag - Moving out

They do follow you if you move to a new address within Switzerland. So they have automatic processes in place to make sure they keep getting their dosh!

Just their deregistration process requires action from the customer.

Cheers,
Nick
