It is legal here in switzerland to download(unless you are doing serverupload), so no problem.

It's a grey area but as you say you are pretty much ok as long as you don't upload anything (including p2p / torrent uploading).

Re: Netflix Switzerland starting September 18

Hi,

I disagree completely with downloading torrents as to me that is stealing. The content providers get nothing. I think you should always pay for what you watch or listen to. It can be indirectly through advertising or through subscription. It is sadly legal here but I have never done it and it does not help new films/series being made

Have fun

Yes, I think that's the direction they should be aiming for. Whether they'd get the programme distributors on board though is another question. Would they make more money from selling to individual countries as they do now or if Sky covered the whole of Europe?

Hi,

it is not piracy if you bought a subscription for the US in dollars and you choose to watch in another country. The location where you watch is totally irrelevant or are you saying that when people are travelling they are not allowed to watch content that they have rightly paid for ? They have not stolen any content they paid for it and the money went to the content providers.

Otherwise you are saying you cannot buy a dvd in one country and play it in another. It is not piracy. That is stealing content e.g. Torrents.

Have fun

Martin
It is piracy and much worse than torrenting.

With torrenting you are just stealing for the rights-owner.

With VPN piracy, you're stealing from the rights-owner and giving money to Netflix who is perhaps one of the major players who would pay that rights-owner for the rights to stream in CH. This makes it far less likely that such a deal would be done and reduces the price that Netflix will pay.

Furthermore, it is also in breach of Netflix's Terms of Service. They basically know what's going on but have pushed the liability onto the users.

And no you can't always buy a DVD in one country and play it in another. US and Europe use different format (NTSC and PAL respectively) and DVD players can't always play them back properly.

https://www.sjbproductions.com/web_p...o/ntsc_pal.htm
DVDs are also typically region-locked to enforce regional-distribution rights. Of course, these can also be bypassed with technical means.

Increasingly you can. A lot of DVDs are now region "free" as are DVD players. Some of the players are even sold with the "How to" hack code to make them multi-region. And if they're not, then it's information relatively easily found on the interwebs. NTSC and PAL don't seem to be as incompatible as they used to be (I have no idea why, it's just what I've observed in buying and playing both).

Re: Netflix Switzerland starting September 18

Hi,

I think we will have to agree to disagree. I am happy to support the creaters of contents. Torrents are much much worse as no one gets paid.

What is happening is this simply penalizing the people who want to pay for viewing the content they are interested in watching. Which is idiotic.

I have a US subscription and I have never had a swiss subscription. I don't change regions and I pay in US dollars.

If you use torrents no one gets any money, certainly not the content makers who the people I care about. Also the tv companies are getting paid through the tv licence money and I play my tv licence.

To be honest if I did not have access to Netflix it would not be a great loss but your view is all content should be blocked even content for which there are no local distributors. I assume you also think all content should be region locked.

We are never going to agree but I will keep paying for content as I want more great films and tv series to be made.

Have fun
Martin

I don't want to get in the middle of the torrent debate largely because I don't think I really understand it, but I am interested in what you say above. Are you in the US? If so, then you're already getting all the good stuff. If you're not, then you are getting a region-specific Netflix experience regardless of the currency you're paying in. I have a "Swiss" subscription and pay in CHFs but when I'm in the UK my same subscription shows me slightly different things. It's frustrating.

Do you disagree with:

# The fact that you are in breach of Netflix Terms and Conditions?
# The fact that Netflix has no right to distribute some titles to people in certain jurisdictions where it has not paid for such distribution right?
# The fact that by pirating though VPN you haven't paid the people who hold the rights for Swiss distribution?

I get it, you already paid for Netflix so don't want to pay Sky (or whoever) too. Netflix is convenient and it is easy to pirate through a VPN for the shows that you didn't pay for - but you paid some money to Netflix so don't feel bad about screwing over the Swiss rights holders - especially since they don't make it easy for you to watch the shows you want.

Re: Netflix Switzerland starting September 18

Hi,

i am breaking terms and conditions only in as much as I am watching the service I purchased in a different country. I purchased the service in the US and have never had a swiss account. If I used the swiss service that would be wrong.

I am using Netflix to see content which is not available in Switzerland and so where there are no distribution owners but I am paying the content owners. For example Craig Ferguson on which platform can I see that ?

I already pay for Sky Atlantic content as I subscribe to Now Tv. I have not pirated anything. I pay for content and never pirated anything. I pay for a swiss tv licence even though I do no watch any swiss tv or listen to swiss radio and I don't complain about it as it is the price of living here. So I have paid all the swiss distributors.

I also have a Sky Online subscription and so I am really supporting the content owners.

Content subscriptions are a way of paying the content providers.

So all I have done is broken a terms and conditions and I delighted to continue supporting content production. I would ban torrents.

This will go on for ever, as we never agree. Sp this is my last comment.

I am very happy to never have been a pirate of any content or software.

Martin

Film recommendation! "What we do in shadows"
We watched this film last night on the UK version of Netflix (using Hola- shhh) and loved it. By Jermaine from Flight of the Concords. Highly recommend it, laughed from the beginning! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3416742/

Re: Netflix Switzerland starting September 18

Interesting - but as the Horizon box isn't 4K-ready, I'll still have to rely on the (somewhat crash-prone) app on my TV.

It's definitely an interesting development strategically - MyPrime sucks in my opinion - it's a freaking mess. Apparently, they've now realised that.

Has anyone managed to use the new download feature with Netflix Switzerland? I have updated the app but I don't get the download option anywhere. I have tried on a Oneplus One and a Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Yep. I managed it on my Samsung galaxy and my Samsung phone. It took a whole initially but then worked well.
