Re: Windows 10

One of the infuriating things about the Home version is that automatic updates are downloaded and installed automatically with no option to check the updates and choose to download and then install manually. I have read a fair few reports about old or incorrect drivers downloaded and installed.

Fair enough if the option would have been enabled by default to avoid basic users not getting updates, but to not allow power users to change that is a big no-no in my eyes.

Totally agree - Some updates in the past that were meant to fix things have ended up totally crippling machines. This has happened with all OS vendors.

Re: Windows 10

IIRC, wasn't one of the biggest issues with W8, was that it was designed and intended to be used, primarily with mobile devices and secondary with touch screen lappies and 'puters - so with 'normal' keyboard devices, the end-user experience appeared to be mixed?

Isn't W10 intended to better address it's 'userbility' across all platforms?

However, I wont be updating my W7 lappy, ..... and strangely no update has been offered for my Windows phone - which is happily running W8.1 and functions well (probably something written on a M$ site, somewhere, to explain whys and whereforths of this).

I wouldn't just yet - Reading the Register and Ars over the last couple of days, who have have been running what they think to be the RTM versions, it would seem to indicate that it's still very unfinished with some show stopping bugs.

If you've got a spare machine and you want to have a play then go for it. If you've only got your main machine that you need to be productive then stay away for the time being. (That advice is goes for all OSs, not just windows)

As with all major releases of brand new operating systems the early adopters effectively become beta testers.

This is exactly what I'll do. I'll update my laptop first and then my main PC if I like it and once all the bugs are ironed out.

Re: Windows 10

Windows 10 was pre-released and had around 60'000 testers worldwide... Microsoft fixed many bugs thought those who reported any...

Now it went public so instead of 60'000 users, there will be many millions, which means much more bug reports and fixes by Microsoft. Wait at least one month if you want serious system stability.

.... or better still, wait for SP 1 (10.1), which might be closer to a finished usable version.

Apparently there is a possibility to not auto-update drivers. Or at least I read earlier today.

...as long as that appears by July 2016. Otherwise we'll have to pay for the upgrade.

Re: Windows 10

For Vaio users, you'll have to wait till October to have drivers available... I'm prepping a usb stick with the English International version and going to install on my laptop tonight to see what it's like.

Hi,

if you want to download Windows 10 and install it from a DVD or USB stick here is the download link

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Have fun

Martin
I am led to believe that the free version is only available if you have Windows 7 or 8 already

Exactly, as their FAQ states you need to supply your former (7/8) Product Key.

Actually that doesn't currently seem to work. I tried doing a direct install from the iso as a custom install and it wouldn't accept my product key. If upgrading from win7 or 8/8.1 you have to boot to your regular desktop and then launch the setup program from your dvd/usb key and all is well.

I read that once you upgrade this way, you can then download an iso would would allow a new/clean install.

Doing the upgrade now from the USB as suggested by someone earlier

Re: Windows 10

Hmm, my lappy wouldn't update due to an incompatible AirDisplay driver. AirDisplay is a programme to use an iPad or smartphone as an extra monitor and apparently is a bit of a bitch to remove.

Re: Windows 10

Wifi sense is stupid. I wouldn't personally use it, until they give more granularity to choose, who you want to give access to your network. It's okay to let a select group or a set of people to use your network, but not all your email contacts and facebook friends. Overall it's pretty sleek and faster than previous versions.
