Re: Windows 10

My W10 Start menu suddenly stopped working!
I went to Google and found this is a common problem

I tried all the fixes I could find including the Microsoft "W10 start menu trouble shooter" with no luck, excluding rebuilding my PC software.
Now I have reinstalled the "Classic Shell" software which i had earlier to give me a Start menu on W7 and W8; now this works fine.

I suspect the problem is an automatically installed Windows update but I cannot be bothered to hunt it down

The Microsoft "W10 start menu trouble shooter" told me "some apps are not correctly installed" but which apps? and how many?
I did try reinstalling all the apps using Windows Powershell but did not fix the start menu

Re: Windows 10

Marton, it's Windows 10, and it's Micro$oft. What do you expect?

I only once installed Windows 10 on a brand new computer that wasn't mine (fortunately! Poor soul....). While installing it, pretty much the only things I had to was entering the user name and their e-mail address, not exactly much to wreak havoc. But after reporting successful installation, the very first thing the system did was a tremendous crash, so tremendous that it had to be re-installed. The re-installation took about 20 times longer than the initial installation.

I haven't perused this thread, so I may be repeating things: Ever since an "Important Windows Update" in November 2015, there is that recurrent issue of the system completely loosing network connectivity without any obvious reason. Whenever that happens, you have to manually uninstall all network devices, one by one (14 in the case of said computer) and then restart the 'puter so it can re-install the devices. It may or may not work. In a later Windows Update, M$ issued a fix that is said to work on certain machines, but it definitely didn't on said computer, an Acer notebook. They don't care. Why should they? People keep buying their poop anyway because they must.

Re: Windows 10

Hi,

Never experienced any problems with Windows 10 and I am still getting the insider builds so I have regular installations and they have all gone smoothly.

As for the loss of the start menu I have not seen that but then again I don't use the start menu. All you have to is starting typing the problem name in the search box and it will appear on the list of search results, click and open the app. If you use the app regularly just pin it to task bar.

have fun
Martin

And if the start menu does not work then how do you access the search box

Even Microsoft admit that loss of the start menu is a common bug

You must be mistaken, BaselLife has never had a problem with Windows 10 so you must be doing something wrong. Stop doing wrong things and everything will be OK.

Re: Windows 10

Start Menu disappeared on me too, searched forums and found many solutions, some worked for one user but not for another. I just took the easiest - run command as admin, "sfc /scannow" - did not report anything updated after completion but rebooted anyway and there.. the start menu is back.

The other suggestion I would have taken was to create a new login profile.

"run command as admin, "sfc /scannow" I had tried that, no luck

"to create a new login profile" I decided that was too desperate a solution

By clicking on the magnifier icon which is right next to the start menu instead of using the search box within the start menu...

Re: Windows 10

Thanks for the groan BaselLife. Obviously I'm not allowed to say I don't like Micro$oft, let alone mention examples of what happens when you use their products.

An operating system that crashes immediately after an allegedly successful installation on a brand-new computer cannot be trusted.

An operating system that produces error messages like "Something happened" (no kidding) cannot be taken seriously.

An operating system that shows more than 50 serious bugs in the first five hours of use is not worth the money.

A software package coming with said operating system with various utilities that are downscaled from former versions and show all kinds of bugs that didn't exist on former versions (I skipped Win8 for good reasons) is a joke.

Next groan please.

Since when has a groan meant you're not allowed to express your opinion? If your opinion is seen as based on irrational grounds, you might get a groan. Complaining about a groan though... poor show. Bit sad really. You could end up getting a red blob for that - imagine how bad that would make you feel.

Works fine on all 7 computers in my household (2 HP laptops, 1 Acer, 1 Asus tablet, an MS Surface Pro 4 and 2 self-built desktops) . Given your opinion is based (apparently) on one experience and mine is on 7, I guess I win. I've had the restart loop on the Acer - which is resolved by removing the battery and restarting. This isn't an issue with the OS; it's an issue with the driver, which isn't MS. And that's the usual cause of Windows errors - third party drivers.

This is because the OS is aimed at the consumer level. A detailed error messages for such folk is pretty useless. Anyone with a small amount of technical knowledge can get the actual cause from the logs.

An OS that shows no bugs (due to the OS) in the first few hundred hours of operation, across 6 different hardware platforms is definitely worth the money.

I've not noticed any downscaled utilities. Nor bugs in any utilities. Really, you've just posted a rant with no real content, and apparently not fact based.

I use linux of various flavours and Window 10. I've no complaints about either. I don't use anything from the evil Apple empire, because I don't want to be locked into proprietary hardware and software.

Re: Windows 10

Hi,

I assume you tried everything listed here:

http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/comp...11364000314532

I groaned you because of the way you expressed the opinion which did not help the user or move the discussion along.I had assumed you had written it in that way as you expected a groan. No one over the age about 3 and does not write on slashdot uses Micro$oft or m$. Also my experience over 30 years of using Microsoft products is that they tend to work well and there is a problem a solution is normally found quickly online. Personally, I have had bad pretty bad experiences using Apple products but I don't write Crapple or something similar. i do take a pretty skeptical view of Apple products and do write comments online but it is the way that it is expressed that is important.

Also this bullshit "They don't care. Why should they? People keep buying their poop anyway because they must." earned you a groan. They do care otherwise why would they be fixing bugs and improving the security of the system. If the alternatives were so much better people would be buying them but still Microsoft Operating systems run on just under 90% of desktop computers.

There are already 300 million computers using Windows 10 and so I am certain the vast majority must be having a good user experience and did not have problems installing the software. Most problems can be resolved using a simple web search.

Without the Start Menu you can always use Windows Key + S to bring up search.

Have fun
Martin

For those with an inoperable start button, do the following:
Open powershell with admin privileges
Copy and paste this line at the PS prompt:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

I have to do this every few weeks, but it works infallibly for me.
