Depends what you mean by shit - if you want a reliable server and you can handle the CLI for all configuration then Linux is fantastic - it just keeps going with no problems.

On the other hand if you want a GUI and you want it as a workstation then it starts getting disappointing, and then you start realising that the whole Linux world is just a fractured buggy mess.

Post written from my VM using the Mint Linux distro.

in June or October comes the big update for Windows 10 ( Redstone). Or maybe Redface if it goes bad!

Re: Windows 10

Hi,

Redstone 1= Anniversary release. Many of the features shown at Build 16. I remember seeing somewhere that someone noticed mention of the build 1607 being the release build number which if the logic is the same as the November build would make it a July release.

Have fun

Martin

And I went through all of them except I skipped Vista and didn'tmobe on to win-8. And win-10 is a virus ... who would install that?!

Re: Windows 10

Same here, but I AM old, although I don't feel old.

I began programming mainframes in 1973 and got first connection to the Internet on one of my own computers (designed, developed and built by m.h.s.) in 1982, when about 1200 computers had Internet access. Worldwide.

I skipped Win 8 too and can't say much about Win 10 yet, except my very bad experience mentioned above. As others said, that may have been an exception, but that's the kind of thing that just must not happen on a brand-new computer. I'm not looking forward to having to use Win 10 on a tablet I just ordered.

Besides that, of course I know that the "counting" in that picture is wrong. A bit simplified, NT wasn't a successor to 98; ME was. And 2000 was a successor to NT. Rumor has it that Win 10 was not called Win 9 because Win 8 was so bad that they didn't dare market anything that smelled of it. So, after my experience with that almost total failure of Win 10 I wonder how bad Win 8 really was.

Vista was the only version of Windows that was really awful. Windows 10 is fine. I use it to make plenty of money - enough to feed and support 6 adults. Ergo - it ain't that bad.

Oh - and I don't make that money by fixing Windows 10 issues. Because by and large, I don't encounter any. Apple OSX is *ing horrible. If it was a horse, it'd be shot - except in France where it would be et. I like linux (red hat and ubuntu), but most of my customers are Windows based.

Young man!

"I began programming mainframes in 1973" Me in 1963, but I do not know if a LEO3 deserved to be called a mainframe; although it was certainly physically big enough.

Oddly enough I never had any serious problems with W8. As mentioned, I used the free Classic Shell software to imitate the start menu.

Re: Windows 10

What about windows ME?

Held on to NT for a long time, then to 2000, skipped Vista, and am Holding on to 7.

If 10 had Media Center, might consider it. (But in reality it was pretty much abandoned before W7)

Anyone have a good alternative for Media Server that was set up with mymovies?

Re: Major upgrade Windows 10

Windows 10 is a bit like the Rio Olympic villiage. It looks OK from the outside, but get inside it and it's still a building site. OK I nicked that from El Reg, but I totally 100% agree with their opinion.

That said, it's a problem affecting all commercial operating systems with building in marketable useless functions that nobody will ever use, and in the process breaking unmarketable useful functions.

If we were to reset the clock back to 1988, but start with the tech that we have today then Linux would have by far the most dominant market share. The only reason why people, and especially, companies stick with windows is that it's so imbedded that it would cost a prohibitive amount to change.

OK, I'm a Mac user mostly, but I'm not gloating, because every OS that they've released since 10.6 has come with an menagerie of problems that severely limits the usefulness of the system for around 6 months before Apple might get around to fixing them. Even then there are other problems that never get resolved.

Good that you mentioned that otherwise I'd say you're not so objective. IMHO good times are over, we have OSX which is never fixed, Windows with lots of issues fixed day by day endlessly and linux which breaks with almost every update (makes you spend few nights to setup everything the right way)... each OS become way too complex, conversely full of annoying bloatware

Re: Windows 10

I had to install El Captain on my 2013 mac mini about two months ago, in the beginning it looked good and modern, with only a few hiccups, Facetime not working being the main issue.
After installation things began to slow wwaaaaaaaayyyyy down, bootup takes ages as well as opening any program, no matter what, safari, chrome, affinity, quark etc. I am beginning to hate the beachball with a vengeance.
On the other hand the ancient I macs at work run fine with Ei Cap.
Weird world.

My 2012 i7 Mini runs it quite nicely.
I've max'ed out the RAM at 16GB and built in an SSD, though.

I have over a decade worth of email in Mail.app and I found I have to close it from time to time or else the thing is bogging down the machine to an unacceptable level.

My mother has a 2012 i5 with 16GB RAM and stock 5400 RPM disk and it's not that much slower, actually.

I don't want to build my own anymore.
I like the form-factor of the Mini.
Recent IntelNUCs also look nice, but apparently have thermal problems (for the i7 variant).

And I somehow like OS X.
Even though it's sort of slow, I agree with that.

I don't play games. The only thing I need performance for are VMs. I have servers at work for that...
