NetFlix Cracks Down on VPN and Proxy Pirates

Have you seen this:

http://torrentfreak.com/netflix-crac...irates-150103/

Netflix is starting to block subscribers who access its service using VPN services and other tools that bypass geolocation restrictions. The changes, which may also affect legitimate users, have been requested by the movie studios who want full control over what people can see in their respective countries...

Netflix is reportedly testing a variety of blocking methods. From querying the user’s time zone through the web browser or mobile device GPS and comparing it to the timezone of their IP-address, to forcing Google’s DNS services in the Android app. _more_

Re: NetFlix Cracks Down on VPN and Proxy Pirates

It's about time for the movie industry dinosaurs to arrive in the 21st century and abandon those ridiculous national licensing agreements.

Blocking customers who are willing to pay for content is nothing but an invitation to download from illegitimate sources.

I don't think this will have too much effect... web browsers can be configured to block such additional requests. SOunds like they're just looking to be seen to take action to placate the movie studios.

Re: NetFlix Cracks Down on VPN and Proxy Pirates

I havent seen if they have blocked me yet, but will do so tonight. My subscription renews on Janury 9th and I already feel crappy paying $9 a month for something that never seems to update their movies. I logged in about 4 times in the last two months and never saw anything new.

Exactly.

These ridiculous country-specific restrictions (delayed sale start in my case) were what led me to downloading in the first place. I would have paid the foreign price, no problem, but couldn't be bothered with such details afterwards.

They have added quite a lot over the last few months... you can (always) check it on their website.

Are you talking about the Swiss site or the US site?

If that functionality is not yet on the Swiss site (I haven't checked as I use the US site exclusively) then there are numerous 3rd party websites that have been catalogueing new additions for ages that are only a 1 second Google away http://whatsnewonnetflix.tv/

Seems a good time to remind readers of the Flipps app. on App. Store and Google Play.

For films, (all under TVHub group) there are Wibi, Happy (kids) and Tap Movies (relatively current releases) ..... 9 free films on Wibi to trial and then sub. will cover all three.

Plus, other film channels on Flipps, including Viewster and Viewster Series (all free, I think).

Maybe not quite the selection as Netflix, but I think current sub. works out cheaper than Netflix - I haven,t checked recently, as I have a lifetime sub. when they were available at the start (for €110).

Subs. have gone up, as it appears to be gaining in popularity and subscribers (assumption), and certainly no problems experienced since you last expressed your concerns.

But Flipps is free (pay only for Flipps HD), and there are free movies on Wibi, plus other free film 'channels' to try out - so nothing lost.

Wirelessly beamed from phone or tablet to wifi enabled TV/or Chromecast, over home wifi network.

"never saw anything new" is a bit different to "never saw anything new that I wanted to watch".

The word police seem to be out early this day

I also said Netflix is "something that never seems to update their movies"

Where I can give credit to Netflix is for their recommendation system. They give recommendations based on stuff you have watched in the past. This is the list that I usually check first, it also had the same old stuff as before. When I dig deeper in other lists (i.e. new releases), I have seen newer shows/movies....just as bland/stale as what i was being recommended

Well, I will agree that their recommendation system sucks ass... on my Samsung TV you can barely see what the hell they have available.

Also annoyingly it has no "save for later" function, so I cant build up a playlist. Most annoying.

Re: NetFlix Cracks Down on VPN and Proxy Pirates

A lot of these are fairly trivial to work around with some quick googling and maintaining a blacklist of VPN IP addresses and whatnot simply won't scale after a fashion. It may block 80% of the riffraff, but I'm not optimistic on the longer-term efficacy of it.

I get why they do it now (Rights restrictions vary from country to country and are highly ambiguous not very enforceable.) That said, I'm 100% with Mark75 -- nationalistic attitudes towards content should be going the way of the dodo as the technology curve is way outstripping the old analog law world.

Re: NetFlix Cracks Down on VPN and Proxy Pirates

One of the ways I read they were doing this was by hardcoding Google DNS servers into the Apps.

So if you're intercepting traffic to those two IPs.........on your router.........

Yeah, I've been quite underwhelmed by their movie selection. I also thought they had more TV shows but I was wrong. All in all I don't think it's such a bad deal, but I was expecting more updates as well.
