Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

Correct you don't need a network, you can just fill up a memory card if you like, we use wifi and the nas though, so far no issues (been using one for a few years now)

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

i have an apple tv 3 and an apple tv 2. no complaints with either. although i probably wouldn't be doing anything fancy with them like jailbreaking, even if i knew how. i think they have now reduced the price of apple tv 3, amybe because something new is on the way. i have both of mine wired via ethernet. the remote control is a slight bore sometimes.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

Get the remote app for your iPhone or tablet... works really well. Jailbreaking ATV2 is easy and there are plenty of you tube vids. Infuse is great for ATV

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

The latest version of Infuse on the iPhone and iPad also works with Chromecast. I believe it also works with un-jailbroken Apple TVs.

Can someone advise, which I way I should go ?
Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I learned that new Apple TV cant be jailbreaked so Chromcast being an open source product must provide more feature over ATV ?

Whats ur thoughts ?
Personally I think You should go with Android but not chromecast or miracast usb dongles. They just stream contents from your other devices and in some case's they know to stuck.
My choice is Android box Minix Neo X7,X8 or something similar. You can watch countless videos on how to on youtube, but basically you can do almost everything you want (need). I have X8 model and can easily watch/stream 4K movies, Netflix... For me most important thing is XBMC/Kodi that runs smoothly and the remote controller is like on apple tv. Don't want to go what you can do with audio and audio apps I'm not an audiophile but basically every android app is available from your chair.

Conclusion: Apple tv2 jailbroken can be found for 150-200chf. The Minix neo X8 new one is 150€ on ebay. So, for the same amount of $ you can choose between new 4K/3D/quadcore... Device or Apple tv 2 produced in 2010 with 720p res.

At the end of course it's your choice. Have a nice weekend and Easter.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I personally would buy both. Chromecast is cheap and an ok toy. Too many limitations, plays mostly only mp4 etc, yet is nice for streaming apps that support Chromecast. Issue are the fixed google dns which take some knowledge to turn off.

Apple TV is in an other league and can't be compared with chromecast. If you have a jailbroken iPad the world is open and you can watch more or less anything. If you switch to the US store there are many options for using the atv standalone. Hbo will start the new service soon on atv and also apple is in the final stages of offering their own subscription tv.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

Hi,

Streaming has been something that has interested me for a long time.

The Apple Tv is a nice toy but only useful if you live primarily in Apple ecosystem.

The problem is if you want both US and UK content then you are going to need more than one device and in fact if you are using a Smart TV you may not even need an external device. The smart hub on the Samsung is pretty impressive.

I like the Chomecast for it's simplicity and the number of channels is increasing all the time. The only problem is remembering to block the google dns addresses (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).

Probably my favourite external device is the roku which has a good choice of channels.

Of course there is another way you could create your own streamer, buy a Raspberry pi and install Kodi. Quick and very cheap.

Have fun

Martin

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

Actually with Infuse, you don't have to jailbreak the iPhone/iPad or the ATV. The app uses the iPhone/iPad to stream (in 1080p) from your computer (or NAS) to an ATV using Airplay, or to a Chromecast. You aren't locked into just your iTunes content either. Here are the formats and media types it supports:
Video
3GP, AVI, ASF, DVR-MS, FLV, M4V, MKV, MOV, MP4, M2TS, MTS, OGM, OGV, WebM, WMV, WTV
Audio
AAC, AC3 & E-AC3, DTS & DTS-HD, FLAC, MP3, OGG
Subtitles
DVB, DVDsub, PGS, SMI, SSA/ASS, SRT, SUB, Timed Text, VobSub, XSUB

The subtitles feature is great for foreign language media. You can pull up a menu and select lots of choices to download subtitles from the internet, including in which language (not just English) you want the subtitles.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I had a chromecast for 4 days. Whilst it was very cool, when It worked, It worked well, there to many bugs. Like dropping connection with the sending program on ios/android/chrome pc/mac all had issues. its not rock solid, more a work in progress. Im sure some had ok times with it. But I find it buggy and NOT worth having even for free. So i refunded it today. I have an apple tv. Whilst its slow it does work. Get a PC on a HDMI stick, plug into TV,
voila.. full PC on your tv what whatever you like.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

i recently got the chromecast v2 - and it essence, its rubbish.
waste of money, bad quality and so slow - really disappointing.

worst is, your mobile will stream vertically, and photos dont show horizontally
anyway, avoid it.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I have both and I've found the Apple TV more reliable.

I have been watching filmon tv through the apps on both android and apple but I find that the chromecast crashes quite often. Not sure if this is an android or chromecast problem but have given up on it now.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I have both, both have them uses as chromecast can be taken with you on travel more easily. But you cannot use netflix or other apps with chromecast with fake geolocation unlike with jailbroken apple-tv. Also chromecast mirroring needs really powerfull machine and is not practical with HD like netflix.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I download a lot of TV series and movies and want to watch them on my "big screen", so I tried out Apple TV since I am a Mac user and found that streaming quality is extremely poor. The picture is laggy and there is no way to fix it (this is for movies that are not being played over iTunes but rather mirroring my computer screen on my TV).
