Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

Can someone advise, which I way I should go ?
Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I learned that new Apple TV cant be jailbreaked so Chromcast being an open source product must provide more feature over ATV ?

Whats ur thoughts ?

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I think it depends on what you have around you in terms of devices. If you have Macs, iPads and iPhones, I believe Apple TV works more seemlessly. You can still add Chromecast, and it is relatively cheap. You would just have to run Chromecast enabled apps.

Chromecast works best with Android, IMO. There is an app called Popcorn Time TV that will allow to to stream torrents in HD to Chromecast. Very cool app, but would not recommend running it on an iPad.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I use an Apple TV and you are right the latest (3rd generation - 1080p) Apple TV's can't be jailbroken. If you can find someone selling a 2nd generation one (720p) then you should be in luck. I run mine through network plugs to a PC in the loft with all my content on and stream to TV.

I haven't used a Chromecast so can't really comment.

Also look at Roku

Nope .... don't get that - I use my iPad all the time, with Chromecast; occasionally laptop (iPlayer/VPN), and once in a blue moon with android phone.

Works fine with all, with no problems or noticeable differences between any.
What do you use for streaming torrents from iPad? I stream with Popcorn Time TV from a Mac to Chromecast. Too much hassle to install it on an iPad. I'm considering a cheap Android table exclusively as a remote for it. My environment is mostly Apple.

I've just deleted my previous post, as I my mis-read your previous one, regarding streaming, and my post is my longer applicable.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

If you wanted to stream from your iPad, if your iPad was jailbroken then XBMC is the best. I guess you could stream then through a chrome cast to your TV. A jailbroken Apple TV would enable you to install XBMC as. You can get small Android boxes that will allow you to stream direct from torrents onto your TV.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I love my AppleTV2, but ONLY because it is jailbroken. I probably wouldn't use it too much in Europe, if I couldn't install XBMC. My home/office is all Mac, so that also makes a difference. XBMC is awesome and runs well on ATV2.

If I did not use Mac, I would probably own a Chromecast, a Roku, and whatever else I could find because I like to play with gadgets. And I would definitely install XBMC on everything. It is my favorite entertainment app!

Good luck!

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

Back to this again. I bought latest Apple TV yesterday (without much thought). The purpose for me is for the kids playroom. They have destroyed 100s of DVDs and broken the DVD player. So i though i'd get them something a bit less fragile for those times when i say "shut up and go watch a movie"..

However. Content is crap! It's pretty much a choice of stuff i already have in itunes or YouTube. Neither great since they can't or write. Or Netflix which also has crap content. I can download stuff and add to itunes but i was hoping for at least some streaming content for kids.

So any experience with this - if i change my itunes to a UK or US itunes, will it change the available content on ATV? Even if i have to pay for some of I wouldn't mind..

android tv sticks are the way to go, quad core, install xbmc and it'll play anything off your network (no streaming needed), netflix etc etc make sure its a quad core if you want HD to play properly.

Any product or supplier links?

It sounds much the same as a Chromecast, so would like to compare.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I have Chromecast and use it to stream from my PC and youtube from my iPad. Does not integrate very well with iPad (need Chrome browser with plugin) - so it depends really, want to stream from a mac or a PC?

Don't get this bit (in bold).
It works fine with iPad for the apps. that are intended to work with Chromecast. The Chrome iPad app. isn't yet configured to cast, and there are no plugins.
The Chrome browser on lappy or desktop casts any tab, when the Chromecast extension is installed.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I use Apple TV (2nd gen so it's jailbroken, and I also have a jailbroken 1st gen) and have a raid plugged into my network, and think its great set up. it plays seamlessly and I can watch content and listen to music from the raid or Apple TV to any of my devices (TV, Imac, MacAir or ipads). if your not using torrents and want TV on demand there is a good choice of TV & movies on demand from ATV and Netflicks etc.

I have blu ray player, 600+ CD's and 500+ dvds boxed in the cellar that haven't seen the light of day for 2 years

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I'm really not too interested to stream my existing stuff to the ATV .. I was more hoping it would have more streaming content for kids so that they can browse and click.

What I'm really asking is -- Is the lack of kids content due to my CH itunes account.. Or is it generally crap. Some of the ATV advertising shows disney channels available and nickelodian or whatever it's called.

Is it therefor worth me setting up a US or UK itunes account.

Re: Apple TV or Google Chromecast ?

I have two Chromecasts. They work fine at home for streaming youtube for example. I tried couple of times to take one of them with me while traveling and found that I actually can't use it in hotels. Chromecast needs to get access to the local network and this fails.

Recently I've bought a miracast (direct wi-fi) dongle. And so far I'm happy with it as it works both with my galaxy s4 and windows 8.1 tablet. And I don't need any additional network for it. Just connect dongle with the device and I can see my screen on the tv/monitor. Somebody told me that this is similar to what Apple TV does.

Of course. It doesn't just magically connect to the world.

Chromecast is an easy way to turn an ordinary TV into a Smart TV. But it really needs more apps to adopt it. I stopped using mine.

I get the impression that the following may also work without a wifi network, but bb2 (or any other user) would need to confirm.

My 8yr. old finds loads of kids programs and films on YT on her tablet and watches on the telly via Chromecast. YT is still a good resource for kiddie stuff. I never cease to be amazed at what folks will upload.

I predominantly use mine just for my Zattoo recordings - it's much better to use than the Smart TV app.
