I'm looking at the G3 because although it is bigger, it isn't much bigger and the the boosted specs (3GB RAM) would be welcome.

The z3 compact I ruled out because it has a glass back. Mi4 could have been a contender except that I can't get one with European LTE bands.

How easy was it to upgrade to lollipop/root the G3? I guess I would stick with 4.4.4 until 5.x.x stabilises as I don't want to be constantly upgrading as lollipop is fixed.

It's a shame that almost all the high-spec phones are only available in phablet-sized packages. :/
IIRC the LG G3 has an official lollipop build and has done for quite a while. LG were on the game this time!

I considered a G3 when I was getting my OnePlus one but I found the screen to be a bit washed out looking and the touchscreen to be a bit unresponsive and the OS a bit laggy. Of course the laggyness may have been fixed with 5.0 or might just have been in my head. Also the high resolution screen didn't do battery life many favours.

I didn't even root the G3, got Lollipop through a normal over-the-air update. It was the first non-Nexus and non-Motorola phone to get a Lollipop upgrade late last year. (LG have definitely turned things around on that front.)

Yeah, a friend of mine is looking for a good Android phone under 500 CHF that isn't too big and the Z3 Compact is the only phone slightly on the smaller side I could find that isn't completely nerfed specs-wise. I didn't know what else to suggest.

Dunno what kind of lag you saw, but I don't get much noticeable lag. Maybe a little on screen start-up. In any case, I wouldn't call what we have to experience with the phones of today "lag". I dug up my old Galaxy S2 recently and for a few days remembered what real lag was like.

I still get over a day of battery life, but yeah, the 1440p screen is too much. It's nifty to show off and watch 4k video on, but I would have been just as happy with 1080p. Word is LG is going back to 1080p for the G4.

yeah. the super high resolution is something of an overkill. arguably even the n5 high resolution is overkill, but a nice to have. i'd prefer the 1080p over the 720p, but probably would prefer 1080p over the unnecessary 1440p.

Re: What to replace a smashed Nexus 5 with?

Get the Moto X 2014. I've used a Nexus 5 and messed around with LG G3. Nexus 5 feels really nice in the hand and is very responsive, but the screen is lacking.
G3 just didn't do it for me (I don't know what that necessarily means, I just felt meh about it).
Moto X feels really premium with the metal around the edges, and the screen is phenomenal compared to the Nexus. Plus Moto apps make the phone so convenient and easy to use. I love my Moto X, but it is definitely a bit pricey.

Mi4 could be an option if he doesn't need LTE.

I was really disappointed in the Nexus 6. I wish they stuck with 5'' or at a stretch 5.5

I just had my smashed N5 screen replaced in the UK, and result is perfect. Much cheaper than starting again.

Yes, I would like it if they tried to keep within the n5 physical size and maybe shoehorn bigger screens into the same form factor.

I don't know what sort of No Man's Land market companies are aiming for with 6" phones. I use the G3 two handed much of the time, but in a pinch I can still accomplish most tasks one-handed. That should be the bare minimum for a phone, IMO. Everything above that is a tablet. I loved the Huawei Mate 7 on paper, but I was so deflated when I got to try it out. There's just no way I could use that thing daily and not feel ridiculous. Too bad, because a 5.5" or smaller phone with the same specs would have otherwise been my choice.

Yeh like I said it might have just been my imagination and when I was getting my OPO the G3 was about 100 more so was a no brainer. If they were the same price I'd have had a good think about it.

Not related to the topic but what about Lumia phones. Lets say Lumia930. Is windows mobile that bad?
Any experiences with Windows phones?

Anyone know why the dual sim is cheaper than the single sim?

Maybe the dual sim is not for european markets but a parallel import?

Either way, that is a sweet price.

It's not a great phone but with a 5'' screen and nokia offline maps it's a no brainer!

The best phone on the market currently is still the M8. Little bit smaller than the N5 but a lot classier (the N5 is a tram driver's phone). It should have Lollipop soon as well.
