Re: What to replace a smashed Nexus 5 with?

I had a look at the phones in digitec today. I think I would have gone for the Moto X. I say would have, because already ordered the LG G3 and picked it up now.

My first reaction is that the LG skin is really horrible.

Possibly size (that's what put me off - plus having to faff about getting it delivered to somewhere not in CH) ...... and lets face it - he probably doesn't even get invites to parties.

Re: What to replace a smashed Nexus 5 with?

my second reaction is that i hate the phone. it is too big. strange that it is only marginally bigger than the n5, but it seems to make a difference both in how easy it is to hold in one hand and use (made worse by the slippery back instead of the nice rubberised n5) and also the balance is too far 'up' than with the n5.

Oh no, I feel responsible

With regards to grip at least, you can skin the phone to give it a more textured feel.

no worries. i'm responsible for my own actions and was also considering the G3 before you mentioned it.

i will definitely send the n5 out for repair now. i think i'd like the moto x software a bit more, but size-wise, i think it would be as bad as the g3.

anyway, i just ordered a rubberised back and hope this will help with grip-ability

Re: What to replace a smashed Nexus 5 with?

Are you sure you got a G3?
Review after review has labelled it an excellent choice, including being named Android Authority's Editor's Choice for 2014.

I can only imagine that quality has slipped, or Digitec are selling knock off grey imports.

Re: What to replace a smashed Nexus 5 with?

return it and get a oneplus one, which became even more cheaper after the EUR crash. I have used iphone for 10 years and just switched to oneplus one, no complaints at all except I don't know how they sell such a quality device for a ridiculous price

Re: What to replace a smashed Nexus 5 with?

I think the skin, I can learn to live with. I'm hoping the ergonomics can be improved with the grippy cover I just ordered.

It's a shame that a lot of the good stock apps have been replaced with LG's own.

I will run it for a little while to see how it goes, but may see if there is a reliable alternative ROM, e.g. CM12 to wipe over it with.

Re: What to replace a smashed Nexus 5 with?

I came from CM11 on my old phone a few months back, so this isn't just Stockholm Syndrome, but I've learned to live with and/or like many of the LG apps. The weather app and smart notes give actual advice on how to plan your day in relation to the weather, not bad. I prefer their Calendar to the Google one, since you can get a week view (doesn't look as good with the Google one, or doesn't exist, can't remember). The Camera's good. Their SMS app is fine. I also use their browser instead of Chrome since it scales to 1440p better (but annoyingly, can't import Chrome bookmarks, .) I disabled or uninstalled most of the others.

I got the Quick Circle case for mine, which helps with grip a little bit, and the Quick Circle funcitonality is nifty. But I've never had a phone with a rubberised back like the N5 or OnePlus One, so maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

I already use 3rd party apps for SMS and calendar/week view. Weather app adn smart notes, I have already disabled (and will remove the LG bloat after I rooted it) - I also don't use Google Now.

The phone/alarm app, I guess I will learn to live with. I tried to use the stock google alarm app, but it doesn't seem to be compatible.

The power/volume buttons on the back is also annoying, but maybe something I will get used to.

Re: What to replace a smashed Nexus 5 with?

To add insult to injury, there is a 44 step process (not including building a windows machine for the task) to downgrade the G3 to an earlier firmware to allow you to unlock the bootloader: http://www.androidexplained.com/downgrade-lg-g3/

compared to a simple "fastboot oem unlock" command.
