Re: What to replace a smashed Nexus 5 with?

I am barely holding myself from pulling the trigger on a new phone, but remind myself that MWC with the mother lode of Snapdragon810 goodness is mere weeks away...

Anyhow, if I snap and were to seek replacement of a Nexus5, I'd look at phones that are either GPe-capable or as-close as possible to stock. Hardware being awesome, I think HTC One M8 is a strong candidate: it was the last Google Play Edition smartphone out there until discontinued last week. My bet is, in anticipation of the M9 GPe coming March 1st but hey...

Next on the list would probably be the Moto X 2014, to answer your quest for a beefed-up Moto G... Again, ROMs galore and pure versions abound on XDA...

If you are capable of pushing this purchase by a few weeks till MWC reveals the next wave of goodies, I'm sure you'll be looking at better deals altogether.

Whatever you pick, let it serve you well!

True, but whether 4 weeks or 6 weeks, it is a wait and you can either afford it or you are pressured to buy one *nao* There is always the mixed strategy of buying something which is good value and slower to depreciate and hold it for a couple of months... HTC One M8 would fit this description, as it appeals to the fresh Apple-to-Android converts with its aluminum body...

Post factum I read the last two pages and I gather you jumped the gun on a LG G3? Sorry to see you dislike it. Attempted some XDA cures already?

Defcon3, by the time you've done market analysis, product evaluation, any other bullshit and finally decided which phone to buy, they'll have a whole lot of new ones out and you'll have to start again.

Maybe this is the definition of perpetual motion finally resolved

Not sure why I merit this type of comment but perhaps it is deserved. Sorry I do not have cash to burn to meet your expectations.

The never ending car purchase......

You probably burn more cash investigating and comparing than just going out and buying a phone that suits you, be iPhone or Android

OP and I are in very different boats, imho. When I buy my next, I wish it is different: faster charging, better camera, etc than my current. He is pressed to buy now for his daily driver is smashed, whereas I have the luxury of being comfortable with my device at hand. Browsing in bed doesn't cost much these days, my reading habits and news feeds suffice for all things tech.

You seem inclined to judge me for no apparent reason. Care to share why you insist on categorizing people you've never met?

Re: What to replace a smashed Nexus 5 with?

Just to complete the story, I returned the G3, the whole episode cost me about 45chfs which I guess isn't too bad.

With the case, the grippability was better at a cost of more weight and bulk. I think in the end, I could have adapted to the greater bulk, but the software was too annoying.

Even if I took the time-consuming steps of downgrading the OS to a vulnerable version, rooting it and then putting a new OS on, I would still have a choice of the rather poor LG stock ROM, or some rather buggy CM builds. Neither was an appealing choice.

The power button on the back was also annoying.

I like LG's idea of reducing bezels to have a bigger screen in a smaller form factor. If they had done it slightly smaller, have an unlocked bootloader and stock Android, I would have been very happy.

As it is, I will get my N5 repaired and wait to see what new phones become available in the next few months.

I can't help but think, that, having started a thread asking for opinions, you were somewhat impatient hasty in making your purchase - less than 24 hrs. ...... and only two pages

And here I was, thinking it might be Lenovo, or Xiaomi...

The Galaxy S6 is shaping to be such a blatant brutal shameless copycat ripoff of the iPhone6 that, if devoid of TouchJizz or available in Google Play edition, it may just be desirable... Pity Sony decided to forego the MWC to pull out a flagship: it may not have survived the news cycle along the rest of them juggernauts rolling their marketing machines but wondering how many users will hold off a purchase only to see what they have to show. Or did some genius in there think pulling out a flagship closer to the iPhone 6S announcement gives them better chances
