In need of laptop recommendations

Like the title says. I am looking for a laptop as my iPad isnt doing enough for my needs anymore and I have no idea what to get.

I am looking for a good amount of storage, easy to work with, trouble free. I ain't playing games, need to use it for pictures, organization, studying, organizing, music, more organization....

I am seriously thinking of mac pro retina display 13.3 inch. Never been a Mac conouter owner before.

Last experience was an HP with major defects, a total lemon, build with windows vista.

I got totally disgusted.

Need the help of my geek peeps!

Nil

Good choice. Go for the Mac Pro. The Air if you are ok with lesser power but want longer battery life.

If you really want Windows, then there are a multitude of options depending on budget and wants.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

For your needs, Air would be fine. You will appreciate the weight and battery life in the long run.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

I have a Macbook Air but I am not a fan of Mac OS and never have been. I bought it mainly because I love the form factor, build quality and the battery life is pretty epic.

However I was in Interdiscount last week and had a play with the new Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 and it is an absolute beast. Fantastic build quality, innovative hinge design and Touch enabled so you can use it as a tablet or PC. I would swap my MBA for one of these in a heartbeat.

The Yoga Pro 3 is a great choice. I nearly forgot about it.

Oh! And don't forget the Lenovo is 500 CHF more than the Air-obviosly overpriced.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

There's this 200 CHF off the 13" MBA "Action":
http://apfelblog.ch/macbookair-200-guenstiger/

but it's the top-end model.
I would say we will see the next iteration of the MBA in... 4-6 weeks.
The only thing that is pretty sure about it is that it will have even less external ports.

OP didn't specify a budget.

Unless you run a lot of VMs or heavy-lifting stuff with Photoshop, LogicPro, FCP then a MBA should be enough.
The 13" MBPs come with slightly more powerful CPUs and more powerful (integrated) GPUs.

Whatever Mac you get, get 8 GB of RAM.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

OP was leaning towards Macbook Pro as it has more ports. I agree with that, and also think it is the better machine. better screen, hardly heavy, more power. Worth the premium over these other stupid HP or Lenovo pretenders.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

PC/laptop preferences depend on needs.

I find Macs hopelessly overpriced and do not suit my computing. A halfway decent Windows PC is generally less expensive and more appropriate for my personal needs. That said, if your primary need is internet surfing, email and some light word processing, don't overlook a Chromebook. Very fast, cheap, virus-proof, and since it is cloud-based, bullet-proof. If you drop it or it is stolen, no worries: just buy a new one. All your data is still there. A great second machine, great for travel.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

It's worth knowing if this laptop needs to travel or not. 15" budget 500CHF laptops tend to be heavy, not have an SSD and often lowres (yes, 1920x1080 is lowres now, and 1366x768 is so 2005). Also ask yourself, is the numeric keypad needed or not? It isn't for everyone.

13-14" models may be marginally more expensive but are usually below 2 if not 1.5 kgs these days, worth remembering for flying if you don't have or want a tablet. And whatever you do, don't buy budget HP or Acer, they're as bad as it gets.

P.S. and no Atom, Celeron or Pentium procs, you'll be swearing at that machine every day, which isn't fun if it has to last 5+ years.

Any old s**t will do the job from a technical point of view - seriously.

The trouble with getting a Mac is you may hate using Mac OS and there will be the inevitable learning curve - especially if you're not a techie.
It's a risk.

Otherwise, go along to Media Markt and choose a laptop that looks nice and feels nice because as I wrote - any of them will do the job.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

See what's on offer - as long as it's minimum of i5 processor.

Par example:

Or

http://www.interdiscount.ch/idshop/p...197/detail.jsf

Interdiscount offering 15% off HP and Compaq lappys at the moment.

I would never by another HP laptop due to their shockingly bad customer service. They basically denied and refused to fix what was then a well known and well established fault with their Pavilion line where the GPU would fail after about 18 months (in my case). So after being given the runaround by HP for weeks I ended up selling a £1000 laptop for scrap value on ebay and vowed never again.

Well you could say the same about the older MacBook Pros. They all had a graphics card that failed (in our case after the warranty ran out).

Yes, and they'd rather take you to court rather than have it fixed for you at no cost to Apple:

http://www.seattlerex.com/seattle-re...verdict-is-in/

"At one point, the judge asked Apple how much it would have cost them [Apple] to have simply replaced my logic board when I had taken it in, and one of the Apple guys said “Oh, it wouldn’t have cost us anything, Nvidia foots the bill for each board we replace.”

The judge’s face almost hit the floor as he shot me a quizzical look, to which I just shrugged. I knew that he, and everyone else in the courtroom was thinking the same thing:

If Apple could have replaced my logic board at no cost to themselves, then why in the hell did they drag this out for so long, and why did they send two people to court to try and make sure that I got absolutely nothing? Friends, this is a question I have been asking myself for three months, and it is a question that I do not have the answer to."

It's all a bit of a lottery with both brands and retailers - ID being an obvious candidate, too.

Personally never had problems with ID, with three lappys purchased; and one had to be repaired under warranty (over-heating, due to faulty fan) - done without quibble and back in two weeks.

However, I think the Envy range is a fair bit better than the Pavilions.

An other thing to add on my list would be to have a Canadian keyboard and English programs. We have been looking into buying it in Canada and having ship over, etc.
