Glass fiber internet

Dear community!

My house will finally have access to the glass fiber network of the city of Zürich ( https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/ewz/de/..._zuerinet.html ) from April on.

I'm currently at upc cablecom and am happy with my connection but having a really powerful connection seems very tempting (specially if you want to stream videos/movies from your NAS at home).

So, does anyone here already have made experiences with the glass fiber so far? Which operator did you choose and where there any problems? (Like downtimes, I mean, the network is still pretty new).

Hope to find some internetholics here

Cheers!

Re: Glass fiber internet

We have swisscom ftth (fibre to the home). We are finding it slightly faster than than ADSL but more more reliable. We now know which devices can't handle the higher speed or fail with the wifi....

Re: Glass fiber internet

I have green.ch fibreglass. In the last 3 years there's only been a single hiccup that lasted about half the day. Connection is extremely reliable and clocks in higher than what I pay for. Not the cheapest, but cheaper than swisscom (as is nearly everyone).

Re: Glass fiber internet

I have UPC Cablecom's 250mbps connection, which is consistently that speed. But it is hard to tell the difference from the upgrade from 150mbps and wifi over 50mbps is not possible.

This is with a copper cable connection....

Which is why my devices are connected via LAN at my home.
Except phones, pads, etc. of course

Okay, well, sounds all very positive!
Guess I'll check out the possible providers then.

Re: Glass fiber internet

Don't forget https://www.fiber7.ch

It's pure internet (no phone, no TV and of course also no radio).
But very fast.

Re: Glass fiber internet

Bump up.

Anyone heard about The Internet Group as an ISP? (what a lame unsearchable name...)
It's a company in Winterthur, gives 1/1Gbps for 66.- per month or 100/100Mbps for 52.- a month, first 3 months free in Zürich on the EWZ Zürinet region until 11th August.

I took a leap of faith and ordered their 100meg offer. It gives me 42CHF/month overall commitment for the next 15 months instead of the current 69+36 francs for the UPC subscription and the coax fees. Bye bye UPC, hello 60% savings. Crossing my fingers, will report back once it's live (1st Nov onwards).

how's your experience with Internet Group so far in terms of service, hardware included, billing, availability etc.?

Also considering their offer since it has a pretty low setup cost and the monthly rates are even lower than Fiber7...

Re: Glass fiber internet

Switched from Swisscom to GGAMaur (provided by EWZ),

Cheap and fast (50CHFs @100Mb). Never had any problems with availability of service etc...

Update:

With a new router in a better location and new iPad speeds close to 250Mbps possible on wi-fi...

just go ahead activation costs 99 CHF which I missed realizing and it got me a bit angry. On the plus side, you get a tri-antenna AC/1300Mbps wifi router for free. I'm not using the router, though as I have one already.

Service is quite stable (I got the 100Mbps package) around 90-95 Mbps in both directions on speedtest.net.

There is a customer webportal where you can see all invoices, give your personal details, etc. So far my invoices have been 0.- (first 3 months ).

The only complaint is that you seemingly can't register them for E-Rechnung which gives you some manual work over time with paying the invoices.
