Re: Swisscom vs Cablecom

Happy UPC customer here. We've been with them for 6 years now. In the entire time, we had about 3 outages and had to get the cable modem replaced once. I have a 250mbit/s connection and that's usually what I get out of the line. In contrast, the fastest Swisscom offers here is a shameful 2 mbit/s for almost the same price, so go figure :-/ we also have phone and TV from UPC. The horizon box sucks, but we don't really watch TV anyway. Phone's largely been trouble free, customer service is fine. My parents have Internet from Sunrise and it's been a continuing nightmare

Re: Swisscom vs Cablecom

If you take Swisscom then you must ( should ) have the Cablecom plug ( for Internet and radio and TV ) capped. If you rent an appartment then the landlord has to do it for you. If you own the house then you have to do it.Its free.

We are also thinking of switching from Cablecom to Swisscom - does anyone know if you also pay the 'antennae' fee (Kabelanschluss) with Swisscom? The added cost of this from Cablecom is about 400Fr per year.

Re: Swisscom vs Cablecom

Thats not true that Swisscom costs more. The prices are basically the same for similar product . Cablecom offers a litlle better in speed. But thats all.And anyhow 100 Mb/s download is more than enough ( Swisscom Vivo M)

Hi Guys

I'm choosing between the two (Swisscom and Cablecom) and am leaning towards paying more for Swisscom because it has the faster internet connection and (allegedly) better customer service.

However, having read the other threads on this topic, there seems to be a running assumption that Cablecom has the faster internet. This does not appear to be the case from the websites:
  • CABLECOM - Fastest Speed 250 Mbits/second
  • SWISSCOM - Fastest Speed 1 Gbits/second (fibre optic) or 300 Mbits/second (if you don't have fibre optic availability)
On this basis, I don't understand all the comments of why Cablecom is faster.

In summary the pros and cons appear to be:
  • Swisscom: PROS - very good internet speed and better customer service. CONS - cost.
  • Cablecom: PROS - cost (cheaper). CONS - poor customer service (and rarity of English speaking assistance).
Any further insight (particularly on the internet speed point), would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Swisscom vs Cablecom

I've changed a cheapest Swisscom internet+landline for about 65 to a cheapest Sunrise of internet+landline over their voip for 55.

The difference is: the calls are free to Swiss land and mobile phones and the internet speed is 3x faster, so bye-bye monthly about 50 for calls.
Ah, and the fritzbox wireless router doesn't need a reset and config reload about every week like the Grand centrale from Swisscom.
I've no TV and I want none.

The only think which was good about Swisscom was their customer support which is the best I've ever experienced.

Swisscom is the much better option -- however more costlier --

If you just use your internet to surf the web -- an alternative is to tether your mobile and use that as your internet connection! However ensure you have an unlimited data plan if you decide to go that route!

UPC Cablecom is the much better option -- and cheaper (just using your reasoning...)

Re: Swisscom vs Cablecom

I am also struggling to choose from which company I'm going to get internet. UPC or Swisscom.
As the previous tenant had UPC working fine with no issue in multiple years, I think I'll go for UPC.
And my wallet will be happier

How much does a 500 mbit/s Internet connection + TV and phone (unlimited calls to all Swiss numbers and European landlines) cost?

Re: Swisscom vs Cablecom

well Swisscom have either 100MB or 200 MB or 1 GB download. If you are obsessed with this speed thing then yes Swisscom costs more. But the cablecom offer is just a trick to catch customers

In how far? I get the full 500 mbit/s out of the line on good days and about 470 on bad ones. Couldn't be happier with them and for 129 bucks a month it's a steal. Swisscom isn't an option for me anyway, as they only offer 2mbit/s where I live. That's one of the big differences between Swisscom and Cablecom: UPC offers high speed connections almost everywhere, whereas Swisscom only covers larger cities.

Re: Swisscom vs Cablecom

If you can get fibre, then get fibre7 https://www.fiber7.ch/de/

It's insanely fast in terms of overall speed, very stable, and you can then just get a TV contract with Cablecom for a cheap monthly price.

Fiber is available to less than 10% of the population.

Re: Swisscom vs Cablecom

I wanted to switch from Swisscom to
Cablecom, and on paper the same service was 20 bucks less with cablecom. Then the guy on the phone told me about the
30 CHF monthly additional bullshit connection fee.

"But don't worry", he said. "Your landlord pays that"
"I'm a homeowner...."
"Oh."

I had both already. Swisscom is much better. Internet from cablecom does not work in all rooms using wifi.
Then you have a problem with your wifi router, not the internet service. Also, if you have a large home or a a lot of concrete wall, you'll need a repeater anyway. We have a devolo (a kind of repeater) in our apartment because our two work areas are separated by a large concrete wall that splits the flat into two with no signal sharing between the two.

That's a lie also as the cost for connection is passed to the renter.
