The problem with slider keyboards is that they add unnecessary bulk to the handset which could go towards more battery life. And with clever typing programs like Swype they no longer even have the speed typing advantage.

True, the physical keyboard market is a niche market--but those who really like it, really want it.

As for swype, having used android for a year now, I don't see major benefits or speed improvements of it--more of a neat toy than anything else, when compared to the BB10 flick typing.

I ended up getting a Galaxy S6 Edge+ on a contract extension. I can honestly say that this is the first truly great phone Samsung has ever released.

Better than a 6+ though? I seem to remember you quite liked the 6+ or 6

Yeah, I had the 6+ but that one had water damage a few weeks back. I loved that one. The problem was that Swisscom wanted almost 600 bucks for a new one with a contract extension and I was able to get the Edge+ for 350.-

It's hard to say which one's better - the Edge+ has a much nicer screen, weighs a lot less and has a slightly better camera (higher resolution, optically they're about the same otherwise, but the Samsung has better software - loads instantly and is more intuitive to use - just double-tap the home button and the camera is instantly ready). The fingerprint reader on the Edge+ works much faster than the iPhone's - no big deal, though. The 6 Plus offers a better integrated system, has a physical mute button, has better battery life (lasts me almost two days vs. one day for the Edge+ - although the latter really does last a full work day even with heavy use).

For me it was an easy choice as it was just much cheaper and you get a phone that's equally good. I might change my mind in a year or so when Samsung again refuses to update the software :-/

Familiarity can breed contempt, I've been rocking an iPhone 6 and 6+ for a year now and even though I am very satisfied with it, I 'could' find myself getting something like an Xperia Z5 just for a change of scene.

However I know that after a year I will probably be fed up with Android, all the old annoyances will resurface and then I will be back to iPhone.

Also a very good point which the likes of Castro make is that even though the iPhone is more expensive...it's at least worth something decent in a few years time.

I think my Wife's HTC one is 2 years old and worth about £50 now.

I'd be surprised if I didn't switch back to an iPhone in a year when the contract's up again. But for now I'm happy with the Samsung

Re-sale value for Samsung phones really hasn't been bad lately. HTC is a different story, though.

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2015 edition

iphone TCO isn't as bad when you consider the resale value. but most decent android phones seem to hold their value reasonably well too. much to my annoyance when i tried to find a cheap N5 for sale...

samsung, i haven't checked, but i guess since the s4, s5 and s6 are more or less the same phone, i expect the value would also have held quite well

Question for all Android beasts around: is the Huawei P8 Lite currently available in STEG for 230- a good offer or shall I try my luck with OnePlus X?

Thanks in advance for your comments / advice / teasing

It's a good price , if you're happy to stay on Lollipop forever, otherwise OnePlus for the win.

Thanks for your answer Joe!
What are the pros and cons of A. 5.0? OnePlus X can be upgraded to 6.0?

Cool! And it will be an automatic update like all others or it has to be started / requested manually?

Well given you can pick up a shiny new S5 for about CHF 300 and a S4 for maybe CHF 250, that's going to have an impact on the depreciation of your used phone if you were an early adopter and paid CHF 700 for it.

As far as I can see, Apple don't drop the price of their old models quite as fast.
