| | Re: The Apple Watch Thread | Quote: | | | | I can't send a text message from a phone that's buried at the bottom of an inside pocket on a cold day.
I can send it via my watch and not even break my stride.
Meanwhile, using "Look Behind", I can keep an eye on the babies in the living room while I prepare their milk in the kitchen.
I can leave the phone out of reach of sticky hands, then turn on the music, turn the volume up or down, or skip to the next track, all without leaving the sofa (or, more likely, the floor).
Later, I can glance to see who just sent me that email without attracting the attention of the boss in a boring meeting.
In the hardware store, I can quickly find out what "adz" is in German, again without having to bugger about with my phone.
I can set a silent alarm that only I am aware of (it vibrates on my wrist), so nobody else is disturbed by it. Again, I can turn it off without having to pull the phone out of my pocket.
I can't speak for everyone, but I find the watch apps absolutely invaluable in my day to day life. | | | | | How do you manage to type on such a small form factor? My text messages are full of typos, and I don't even bother trying to read from my phone at all.

I'm still a fan of the watch, wearing it now, and agree with a lot of what Dougal's Breakfast said.
One area where it could be better is in fitness. The nike+ app is crippled because os1 does not let it use the accelerometer so it must use the phone, while the native fitness apps don't upload to commonly used platforms such as starve or garmin connect. For leisure runners and the like, it is "ok" but for those who do their sport a little more seriously, it's not much of an option.
For fitness I use a Garmin GPS watch instead, it's basically much better.
I do love using passbook on the watch, for example to go through the airport gates.
Siri is a definite strength, and will only get better over time.
From a style point of view, I still think it's a lovely device, the extra straps are brilliantly designed and can be changed easily in seconds.
Finally, as I pointed out earlier, it quite often happens that I have my phone in my bag or even pocket but would still miss calls that my watch alerts me to. While I do not like talking into my watch for a phone call, it alerts me that I can dig out my phone and take the call.

I have a few swatches, but whenever they try to do something clever, beyond standard watches, they inevitably fail.

I'm just a bit mystified to see yet another article that talks about Apple watches vs some potential rival or other, while completely ignoring the existence of all the other smartwatches that are out there.
Apple were really late on the scene - so why do they get all the attention?

Just like they invented the phone.
And the mouse.
And soon they will invent a vehicle on four wheels that can move without a horse.

Just pulled the trigger on a Sport edition with black strap and smokey grey body for the undercover look
Managed to snag a fantastic deal on ricardo since I wasn't prepared to pay RRP for a first release by Apple which will probably be obsolete this time next year.
I will play with it for a few days and see how it goes, but with the latest OS 2.0 update a lot of things have improved, including App handling and battery life so my earlier concerns may no longer be valid.

Anyone wants to share their favourite / most used apps? I don't have that many at the moment, but would be interested in hearing from other AW owners.

Hmm, good question. I generally just prefer the built in functionality whereby I see my appointments easily, the front screen stuff.
Maybe I use Wemlin quite a lot, to check public transport.

Fixed it for you. | Quote: | | | | You seem to misunderstand what a smart watch actually is: and what it is, isn't a watch!
It's a convenient, wrist-worn interface with your phone. This means that without having to dig into your pocket or bag and fiddle about with a tiny keyboard, you can: - Appear on YouTube after being filmed walking into a wall or pool because you're always staring at your wrist to get the newest exchange rate.

Hardware and software. | | | | | Oh gimme a break. Every update is full of bugs and is no better than Microsoft. And they won't even let you go back to a version that works. After the latest update, my iPad crashes every few minutes. The Apple updates are hit-or-miss.
Note, I'm typing this on a Chromebook: Fast, stable, cheap.
Apple is a hardware company trying to make software, and Microsoft is a software company trying to make hardware.
