Re: The Apple Watch Thread

Hi,

all software has bugs but now my wife uses Apple gadgets always waits until the first or second set of bug fixes out as she has had too many problems with the Apple's first releases of software. To be honest I think it is the best advice is to wait.

On the other hand I am still on the insider program for Windows 10 and so every so often a new build is automatically installed on my machine...and I have had less problems than wife has had with IOS updates i.e none.

Have fun
Martin

Re: The Apple Watch Thread

Well of course I finally bought one a week ago.. And dammit i kinda like it. I usually don't like a square watch full stop but i'm getting used that. I thought it would be totally pointless to control music when usually the phone is in my hand anyway .. But as i found on Friday night it's handy to control the music when the phone is by the bose speaker thingy across the room and voice recognition works really well even for sottish english .. "Play some bagpipe music" And i can respond pretty well to msg or whatsapp using voice.
Being an admin of a FB group of 18k members i get a lot of messages! Having a quick look on the wrist is pretty good compared to the phone.

The health stuff - unsure, it's probably fine for general walking around but it's not for proper running/cycling. No Ant+ just like the phone and you need the phone for GPS.. Today while out cycling it measured my heart rate every ten minutes.. My garmin HRM monitors constantly and the difference in numbers is night and day . After a particularly steep climb i maxed out in garmin at 183bpm and averaged 152bpm over 50km or so.. The watch didn't record anything over 110bpm.

It's fun, it's quite nice, reasonably useful .. 700chf well spent, i'm not sure.

Why I'm getting rid of my Apple Watch
By Castro

So I've had the watch for a month now, plenty of time to put it through its paces and my thoughts are as follows.
  • I miss my conventional watches. The idea is that you always wear your Apple Watch, but I for one like to mix it up a little.
  • I hate the activity tracking on this, the silly coloured rings hide the core information that I want to know e.g. number of steps. My Fitbit did a much better job, and I wore it on the opposite wrist to my conventional watch.
  • There are almost no situations where its socially acceptable to play around with your watch, but not your phone. Either way people in meetings will glower at you.
  • You have to lift the watch up to see the time, otherwise you are looking at a black screen. At least with the Pebble Smartwatch the screen is always on, which is better for passive glances.
  • The rectangular face hasn't really grown on me, I prefer circular watch faces
  • I find the navigation to be clunky.. its certainly better after the last Watch OS update, but still some way to go. Its also quite slow in opening certain apps as it has to transfer info to and from your phone.

Obviously there are many positives and things I'm going to miss e.g. controlling music player, brilliant notifications, having an activity tracker and watch all in one etc... but on balance its not enough to save it from Ricardo.

...blaah
Pretty much same for me.. I'm only a couple of weeks in but heading the same way I'm sure .. I have 4 or 5 watches i like but feel like i need to keep the apple one on. Prefer round face although it's grown on me a bit. I mentioned previously the sports stuff is rubbish ..

I'll probably hold off a few weeks but if i got a decent off now it would go..

Black one anybody? sapphire screen version..?

Re: The Apple Watch Thread

While I wait for my first ever Apple Watch to arrive, I have a question that Iím not able to find the answer to.

If I have find my friends enabled on iPhone and watch (WiFi only version), and I went out for a run with the watch and left my phone at home, what would find my friends show? 2 locations for me?

Just incase I break my ankle and OH needs to find me Ö

If you do not have a cellular version of the Apple watch, then the “Find my Friends” will not be able find you if you are not connected to a wi-fi and do not have your cellular iPhone with you. Looking forward to receiving my new Apple watch version 7 next week as well . I ordered the cellular version for this reason (among others). Here an article I found. Hope it helps:

Surprised by that, as it works for gps sports apps (ie Strava) without the phone.

I guess despite having gps it needs a phone/WiFi signal to send the info to others.

I don't think strava is updating your location until you're back in range of your wifi or phone. What it does is store the route you ran by collecting GPS data and then it syncs to the cloud once you're back online.

Re: The Apple Watch Thread

Apple took the money off my card for my watch last night. Hoping that means it will dispatch earlier than planned. Anyone know generally how long there is between them taking payment and receiving item (for items with delivery wiring times).

It was the same with mine: preparing to ship, and then it was there that same evening - they send it same-day delivery as standard

Since I started that thread back in 2015 - actually with a series 0 not 1 if I want to be pedantic, I have had I think the series 0, 1, 2, 4, and now 7.

I didn't fully expect to get the 7 but I must say I am very happy with it. I do really like the apple watch as a product, if only as a replacement for my noughties ipod nano for listening to music when I run. But in fact for lots of reasons. I think they put a lot of thought into this product in terms of form factor and user interface and interaction - and on purpose a lot less interaction than the iphone. I am also a big fan of the various watch faces they have designed, I think they are awesome.

My series 4 was rose gold. Living in Zurich I called the apple store a couple days in a row and they had the model I wanted except in midnight black rather than polarstern. I wasn't expecting to like the black but now I would say I am super happy with that. I was able to reserve by phone and pick up a few hours later, in case that is helpful for anyone of you considering it.

I also think the case for the cellular version is a lot stronger now that certain third party apps can take advantage e.g. Spotify and Streamlets (internet radio). Before you were restricted to the native apps, and even that was quite patchy.

For me it is a total no brainer to have the cellular. I pay chf 5 per month to Swisscom.

For that, I can leave my phone at home when i go running and still stream spotify etc. If I forget my phone at home, I can still contact and be contacted. If I have an emergency, it might be useful to call and receive calls.

Oh no! Mine was the cellular version - don‘t know if they ship from other places according to the model. Anyhow, it‘s a version worth the wait!
Anyhow, just checked the emails I received - mine wasn‘t due to be delivered until yesterday, but it still came earlier - so you might still be lucky.
