Problems accessing BBC News website?

Hi, since Friday night I 've been having trouble accessing the BBC News website (news.bbc.co.uk OR bbb.co.uk/news). It either takes forever to load, or gives me the "server not found" message.

I am having no trouble with any other sites.

Is anyone else having trouble?

I live in Basel and use Swisscom.

Re: Problems accessing BBC News website?

Works fine here (Basel, Cablecom).

Reboot anything you're able to (ie laptop, router, modem) as it's likely to be a corrupt DNS issue.

We have had real problems getting BBC Internet Radio with our two Macs and iPad here in Basel the last few days - has anyone else had this problem? We've got broadband through Swisscom. From Thurs am to today we could not listen live or download any podcasts. This afternoon I have managed to listen live but with occasional breaks in transmission. We've never had problems before and it's a mystery. Any and all suggestions warmly welcome!

Re: Problems accessing BBC News website?

I also had the same problem for the last 2 days. I switched my DNS servers to google's, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and it started working fine. Not sure if it's a DNS issue or just coincidence though.

Re: Problems accessing BBC News website?

Yep, same here - it seems to affect just .co.uk sites

Using a DNS of 4.2.2.1 seems to resolve the problem in some places but not all.

Often .co.uk sites seem to resolve to a private IP address regardless of my DNS settings.

Glad it's not just me - I thought I was going crazy.

Well, this kind of question falls into the category of "if you have to ask, then you probably shouldn't be screwing with the settings"

Anyway try this site for a list of public DNS servers. Also just above the list is a link where it gives instructions on how to change the DNS settings on various routers and systems. The windows settings are towards the bottom of the page and the Mac and iToy settings are just below that.

You'll probably find that you need to change the DNS settings for each different network that join.

Re: Problems accessing BBC News website?

Glad it's not just me then ...
What i have found ;

BBC.CO.UK very slow to link and at times out, other .co.uk web pages times out.

Is problem my iPad ?
- Tested on iPad , laptop, iPhone 5 and 6 and same. Via wife's tablet (Android) and .co.uk website you can't access via other devices , connects o.k. after a long pause.
- Switched off WIFI on iPhone 6 and via 4G all works ok
- Access to .com web site all o.k. via WIFI.

Popped into Swisscom shop in Zug.
Explained issue ...asked person to test it to see issue. Refused to test via shop Swisscom internet connection, because me asking him to try bbc.co.uk on his iPad was a security risk !
Maybe it got lost in translation :-)

Re: Problems accessing BBC News website?

Same here, it started sometime on Saturday. Sites affected are '.co.uk' and associated IPad applications. Using Swisscom, living in Zurich.
Swisscom TV seems fine.

Re: Problems accessing BBC News website?

I presume Swisscom are resolving issue (hoping someone has logged issue with them).

The thought of trying to explain in English, to someone whom first language is not English fills me with dread.
Getting past the ....reboot Switch ...it's the laptop/tablet/iPhone/ it's the website ....the line test etc

It might not be.

From what I can see this problem seems to be affecting just Apple devices - I may be wrong though

Not much evidence to go on, but I suspect the Apple devices affected are those running iOS 8 and Mac OS X 10.10 (yosemite)

With these latest systems the process responsible for handling DNS queries was changed completely - this new process (called discoveryd) has widely been reported to be a whole lot of trouble, and it looks as if Apple will reintroduce the old system (called mDNSresponder), which worked pretty much flawlessly, with iOS 9 and 10.10.4

If there's been a change (upgrade) to one of the major Swiss DNS services then it may be that it's screwing up the discoveryd process. Hence quite a few of us have managed to resolve the problem just by changing the DNS service to an alternative from the one supplied via DHCP when your device connects to a network.

Just an up in the air theory with no evidence to support it whatsoever.

Not tried since 8pm Sunday night ....But for me issue was ...
iPad 1 - Stuck at IOS 5 (Appes way of locking you in to an OS version that most apps no longer support - thus need to replace iPad).
Has issue.

iPhone 5 and 6 - latest IOS version 8.2.
Both have issue.

Laptop - Windows 8.1 :-( (Run in desktop mode to get rid of those tile things).
Has issue

Cheap (CHF 120) Android tablet - runs ...version KitKat ??
Seems o.k. - Well thats what wife said anyway, but slow to load web pages from .co.uk, but those that time out on devices above load.
