Wifi card/external modem for PC

Hi guys

Hoping someone more techy than me can recommend a good wifi card/modem for the PC.

I have a new Swisscom connection 200mbs up/down. Speedcheck on the Swisscom box shows that this is what I am actually getting (most of the time). By the time it gets to the computer, it's more around 15-40 mbps. Not too bad but I would obviously like to get closer to the 200/200.

Currently I have a USB modem (don't hurt me) and I am hoping that getting something better will solve the problem, ie that the USB is the bottleneck. I think I have something like https://www.asus.com/Networking/USBN53/specifications/. Or maybe I need to fiddle with some settings?

Anyway, I am willing to spend a couple of hundred chuffs to get closer to the 200/200, but didn't want to just get a 200 CHF modem in case it made no difference...

Ethernet is not an option sadly. The internet box and PC are in the same room but maybe 10-15m apart. (yes it's a big room).

Help much appreciated. I have looked for other similar threads but couldn't find anything relevant without spending all day on the search.

Thank you!

Re: Wifi card/external modem for PC

Well this is the cheapest and fastest option:

https://www.digitec.ch/en/Search?q=netzwerkkabel+15m

I assume that what you have is a USB wifi key for your desktop computer? It's not super clear from what you've said. And the problem with it is that it's ancient and has a USB2.0 interface?

You would have two options then if you stay with wifi: 1.) Get a modern, possibly dual-wifi channel USB3 stick, or 2.) get a PCIe wireless card that goes inside the PC, with external antenna. If your computer doesn't have the blue, USB3 ports then you are basically out-of-luck for the USB-Wifi stick.

I have one of these:

I found it unreliable, but in reviews it's one of the best.

The router also needs to be able to transmit the data quickly over wifi, and some don't have the processing power to do this. Note that 300 Mb/s is the _maximum_ for 802.11g.

Thank you. Turns out I do have USB3 so I'll have a look specifically for USB3 network adapter.

Phil_MCR, I have a USB wireless modem which is wirelessly connected to the internet box which is 10-15 meters away...

ah. got you. fyi, wireless network adapters aren't normally referred to as modems. the box connecting directly to the cable internet coax is normally referred to as a modem, hence the confusion.
