AFAIK they're in the process of rolling out the card + pin solution to all customers in the US as we speak.
I'm sure somebody from a bank will be along shortly with more precise information, but my understanding is that the US are switching to chip + *signature*, not chip + pin.

Close to 50% of the Swiss population have an iPhone, so penetration won't be an issue. Makes more sense in connection with the Apple Watch as you won't have to take out your wallet for paying, which is pretty awesome.
You need an iPhone 6 I think - not everyone has that yet, although this problem will go away in the course of time. Nobody has an apple watch, and I expect it to quietly die soon.

At the end of the day I think touching my phone to a terminal is only marginally more convenient than doing the same with my card; if I have to first select on the phone which card to use, it's about the same level of fiddling. And I still need my wallet, because my phone battery will not last a full day.

There are advantages to using your phone. The first is security (your card details aren't transmitted; they're not even stored on the phone one the registration process is done), the second is that you can immediately see the transaction and also all recent transaction history.

The disadvantages are that using a phone is more complex than simply waving a card around, and the maximum amount one can pay via contactless is so low that it's not that big a deal if someone does scam you (much less than, say, having your phone stolen).

Re: Apple Pay

before apple pay being able in Switzerland, I have called CS and asked will it be possible to use apple pay and the reply was;
"It is already possible"
altough, he was talking about noncontact pay, took me a while to convince him that noncontact pay and apple pay are completely different things

He probably thought you wanted to use the card to buy apples.

Re: Apple Pay

Cornercard have quietly (i.e. didn't tell me that they) have increased the range of cards they offer that work with Apple Pay. When putting iOS 10 on my iPad yesterday it suggested adding my Cornercard Miles and More card to Apple Pay. I did and it was accepted.

I just tried using it with my Apple Watch at the local Coop. Got a very funny look from the cashier, but it worked. I'm quite impressed with it. From what I've read it works with the watch even without the phone present. I'll give that a go next time, but overall I'm quite impressed.

I think the big banks here are crazy not to get involved with this.

Re: Apple Pay

I was happy to find out when it became available I already had a card compatible with Apple play. The Swiss bankers cars. I demanded this card trough Post finance online services. It is a prepaid credit card alike. Actually it is my favorite. There's no annual fees, only transaction fees. I use it only when I go on vacations coz as we all know Post finance debit cards are quite messy to work some of the times. So I use that Swiss bankers card coz I found it to be more to my liking than those from Cornercard. At least the one I tried. Swiss bankers have an app where u can control everything about your card. Transactions, balance, activate or de activate the countries you want it to work, de activate the usage of the card for betting websites. De activate the contactless feature, and of course suspend/cancel the card in case you lose it or it's stolen. That's the one I use Apple Pay with. And when I go back to my country since I often go back home troughout the year.

Re: Apple Pay

How and where can the Swiss Bankers card be recharged? I'm looking for an Apple Pay compatible card that I can charge by wiring money to it. I don't feel like carrying larger sums to a Kiosk for recharging :-/

But anyway, until Viseca and / or Swisscard AECS support Apple Pay, not a lot of people can actually use it.

Well I guess there's several ways but the way I do it since I got the Swiss bankers card from Post finance home banking services. We find that under that travel or something like that option. you Will find looking for that option that mentions payments while traveling or some sort. Can't remember exactly the amen if the topic but it's the one with the airplane icon. That's where you can order the card and also charge it. It takes always around 1h to become available. Without loging in now that's as much as I can help. The Post finance app doesn't feature that option. Must be web version. Cheers.

Re: Apple Pay

Question .. Although I know that Viseca is not yet supported. I tried scanning my card..
The message came back that "The following UK banks are supported .. list"

In other words my phone thinks i'm in the UK?? I checked all my apple settings and everywhere i can think of list my Swiss address.. From my apple ID, App store, my general name and address etc etc..

So why the fek does my phone think i'm in the UK.

* I pay apple monthly for iCloud etc from my same Swiss card and address too.

Can't give you an actual answer to that but I can tell you I'm still using my original Apple ID from my home country and it works with Apple Pay here with the supported cards. So regardless of your Apple ID country you should be able to add Swiss cards and use it here.

Re: Apple Pay

I had a very detailed conversation with my Raiffeisen branch manager a few weeks ago, after several inquiries into ApplePay support were met with "we do not support ApplePay and cannot give any further information" replies. After wearing her down a little, she finally disclosed that the director of Viseca is on the board of Paymit, and so she assumed ApplePay will never be supported as long as Paymit has a breath of life left in it.

Then I found an article from last July, with more details about the monopolist/mafioso style partnerships of Swiss banks against the threat of Apple's service. Big surprise. Furthermore the article sites plans for Paymit and Twint to merge under the name Twint. So the options for contactless smartphone payment in Switzerland will be Twint, Twint or Twint for the foreseeable future.

https://www.macprime.ch/news/article...le-pay-schweiz

And so it is in this beautiful country: zero choice met with oohs and aahs.

Re: Apple Pay

It's interesting that you mention this today: Swisscard and Graubündner Kantonalbank now support Apple Pay, which means that most people should be covered. VISECA won't support Apple I guess but that most people are with Swisscard anyway (they also issue Coop Supercard etc.)

http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/wirtscha...story/16363921

Essentially, this means that Paymit / Twint is pretty much dead and Apple Pay has won.

EDIT: just tried adding a Supercard and an Amex - both issued by Swisscard - not working yet. I guess this was more of a state of intent

2nd EDIT: the first supported Swisscard cards will be Amex (yay, I have one of those) as well as Swiss-branded master cards etc. Supercard etc. aren't listed yet. Amex will be supported starting in November.

Re: Apple Pay

Lucky for me Luzerner Kantonalbank where I have my other account uses Viseca too! More illusion of choice.

I wouldn't sound the Twint death knell just yet. But like all things Apple, the Swiss will resist to the end, right up until they don't.

Re: Apple Pay

I think there simply isn't a huge market for app-based payment solutions. It's annoying as heck if you have to unlock your phone, open an app, enter a password etc before you can pay. I think built-in solutions such as Samsung pay or Apple Pay will have a bright future, though. Sooner or later, all card issuers will support mainstream solutions. But before that, they'll waste millions on their own efforts, I guess :-)

Do you know if it is the plain branded 'proper' Amex or the CS Bonviva ones or both?

Re: Apple Pay

If iPhones are so prominent that the Swiss financial industry sees ApplePay as a threat, so much so that it needs to push its own system to keep form losing money, then all Apple needs to do is sit back and let the customers complain their way to acceptance. If the opposite is true, that there aren't enough iPhone owners out there to matter, then why not just support both ApplePay and Twint?

The current situation makes no sense.

Well, around 60% of the phones sold in Switzerland are iPhones - so I think we all know which of the two it is :-)
