Apple Pay

If anyone's interested, Apple Pay works just fine at Migros, Coop and SBB pay points.

Re: Apple Pay

Has it been released in Switzerland now?

I have the "wallet" app which seems to have replaced "passbook" but no option to add credit cards.

Sorry, should have been more explicit.
I have UK credit card, so it appears that it works fine when using cards from countries in which Apple Pay has been officially launched. If you have a card from such a country and the issuing bank supports Apple Pay, then it should work anywhere you see the contactless payment symbol.

I would recommend that being more specific is probably preferable to being more explicit.

Nope. Because although I have UK credit and debit cards, I can't use Apple pay even in the UK. As my iTunes is linked to my Swiss credit card and Apple pay hasn't been released in Switzerland, I can't even access the feature.

But yes, I would have preferred to be more specific, although being explicit works just fine.

I don't think it has anything to do with iTunes, does it? Depends how useful the feature is as to whether you bother to get a uk appleid and/or link a uk card.

It's just handy as I can register cumulus / supercard points and pay with the phone. What I'll do with the saved 4 seconds I don't know....

I must just be visiting the wrong sites, then .... I'm always getting the warning that it includes "specific content"

Ah, that's because those websites know exactly what you're after....

Re: Apple Pay

Think it might be helpful to re-title this as "Apple Pay works if you have a UK Apple Account and Credit Card".

I guess it would work similarly for a US setup too.

Good idea. Perhaps I can then revisit my post every time Apple roll out support to another country. Or perhaps, those without Apple Pay can move on and read another thread, those with may learn something of use to them.

Just apply common sense and take the original post (and the follow-up addendum) as it would be by a normal, rational third person. It's not my fault you can't use Apple Pay.

Those who have working Apple Pay can use it Switzerland, those without can't.

Re: Apple Pay

There are many things that work here, that aren't available in CH, such as Sky TV, iPlayer etc etc.
Your original post is confusing to most people, therefore I think it would make sense if you tidy it up. You wouldn't need to constantly update it, if you wrote a general message such as "If you have downloaded Apple Pay from the App Store and added a credit card, you will be able to use it in Switzerland, no matter which country's App Store you downloaded it from". This indemnifies you from ever having to update anything.

Re: Apple Pay

Which SBB Pay points do you mean? The automated kiosks or the counters?

Also anyone know if Coop, Migros, or SBB accept Discover/Diners Club?

Re: Apple Pay

It works wherever you see the 'contactless payment' symbol (like the attached). It even worked in Manor and Ochsner Sport at St. Jakobs today. Some (all?) SBB machines are contactless compatible.

Re: Apple Pay

unlikely to come to Switzerland (or rather: to Swiss customers) any time soon - banks, credit card companies and retail are all trying to push their own solutions here first. One they've failed, Apple Pay will arrive :-)

Re: Apple Pay

hi,

to be honest this a solution looking for a problem to solve. Apple Pay does not make a lot of sense as requires a massively overpriced phone. The other solutions will probably for same reason that Apple pay makes little sense, there is no real problem to solve. I could already swipe the card to pay but I don't even use that....time it solves is minimal.

In the US they have not got as far as card + pin and so you could see that there might be a problem there to be solve, but not elsewhere.

Have fun
Martin

AFAIK they're in the process of rolling out the card + pin solution to all customers in the US as we speak.

Close to 50% of the Swiss population have an iPhone, so penetration won't be an issue. Makes more sense in connection with the Apple Watch as you won't have to take out your wallet for paying, which is pretty awesome. Google Pay will probably also be available here, so those who don't use iOS have a mobile pay solution as well.

But again: it'll take forever for Apple Pay to arrive here as the Swiss banks first one to try and fail with their own plethora of solutions.
