How fast is Sunrise's "reduced speed" after you exhaust your 4g limit?

My wife and I use Google Hangouts with their Dialer app (so all calls are data-only) and Skype extensively for communication.

I'm looking into mobile carriers and am trying to pick the best setup. One option is the Sunrise base plan at 20CHF for unlimited data, plus 5CHF for a second device. The other is two Salt plans at 15CHF each for 1GB of data. To better compare each, has anyone used Sunrise and have an idea if Hangouts/Skype works reasonably well on "reduced speed" when the 4G data cap is reached?

Salt offers a 35F a month by month DATA only sim card.. unlimited data.
If you have good signals for SALT its worth it..

But if I can get 2 Salt plans at 15CHF each, why buy only one at 35CHF? We're pretty vigilant about using Wifi when it's available, and have never gone over 500Mb in any given month in the past two years.

true true.. I'm a heavy user of data like 6-15 gb a month or more so unlimited is quite a good idea.

Which generally isn't the case if you live outside of Zurich :-)

The reduced speed is horrible, it takes aaages to load even simple websites.
Think analog modem speeds.

Good to know. Sounds like Salt is probably the better option for us. Thanks!

Re: How fast is Sunrise's "reduced speed" after you exhaust your 4g limit?

Totally agree to Squeeeez, the reduced speed is totally useless for skype/hangouts/youtube, etc... You can still check your email, and if you're patient even check Facebook or Twitter

I have Sunrise with 500MB, though usually before mid-month I've used all of them, so after that I pay 1CHF per day and have 1GB per day, until the next month comes in.

May not be a bad idea if you plan to use wifi as much as possible, you would only pay this extra 1CHF daily in the last days of the month if you need it.

Re: How fast is Sunrise's "reduced speed" after you exhaust your 4g limit?

Yes, 256kbps is correct.

referenced on their website
http://goo.gl/QSWkYv

This should still be ok for VoIP calling however, most platforms (Skype, Hangouts, FaceTime) will re-calibrate quality to suit bandwidth available.

But yes, agree.... I would just pay to top up again, can't stand shaping.

Is 15-30chf per month really so much of a big deal for peace of mind and the ability to surf without having to constantly check your data allowance?

30chf is lunch for two at Z'Graggen. I'll gladly take lunch with my wife over the ability to watch cat videos on a 5-inch screen while waiting for the tram.

Yes, I'm sure without that 30chf saving your ability to eat out is severely impaired.
