How much memory space does a DVD require?

Does anyone know how many MB/GB an average 2 hour DVD needs?

My reason for asking is primarily, is it possible to use my computer to transfer a DVD film onto a USB stick; and if so, (approx.) how big of a stick would I need?

Thanks.

Re: How much memory space does a DVD require?

a double-sided dvd can be around 8.5gb. though if you were going to copy for viewing, you would normally copy and transcode at the same time down to a more manageable level.

If this article is to be believed, it should fit comfortably onto any modern usb stick:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD

Re: How much memory space does a DVD require?

A great free tool to convert your DVD to any format is Freemake Video Converter: http://www.freemake.com/

You should be able to get your DVD down to a much smaller size depending on your need for quality and the device you want to play it on.

Re: How much memory space does a DVD require?

Thanks for the info.

My daughter has to show a film to a youth group.
Fortunately, I've just purchased a new beamer, anyway, which she'll use, but I was just exploring the options of showing the DVD, as she'll need to carry all equipment.

I have a smallish bog standard, cheap DVD player (size of a notebook), which definitely works (I only got the beamer yesterday, so still trying things out, until I'm familiar with it).
Another option is a plug-in DVD drive (for a non-D\: drive computer), via USB socket. This is much smaller and lighter, but does need to source it's power from the host hardware, so I still have to try this, over the weekend.

The idea of transferring from the DVD to a USB stick was just another possibility I thought of, but if it's not a straight forward transfer, then I probably wont bother. I would also imagine, that once transferred, any menu options (such as language and subtitles) won't be available.

Re: How much memory space does a DVD require?

The computer DVD drives, via USB, don't work for playback - not found.
The DVD transferred onto a 32GB stick without problems (forgot to check the actual file size, but I think less than 10GB).

Played back perfectly on my computer - even with menu options in tact.
Unfortunately not the same on the beamer - it shows the files, but playback is distorted, so I will need to convert the file format if I still want to do it that way.

Must admit, the DVD player is looking favourite, at the moment.

Re: How much memory space does a DVD require?

a 1:1 blu-ray remux is about 25 gb, a full one with all the menus, audio tracks, etc. can be up to 50 gb. Old DVDs are 4.7 gb for DVD5 and 8.7 gb for DVD9, depends.
I use MPC media player classic. what do you mean it is distorted on the beamer but not on the computer? what software are u using?

Re: How much memory space does a DVD require?

Not really, but thanks.
I'm currently watching with the beamer connected to my laptop.
I can also connect my phone wirelessly using widi/miracast and watch via that, also.

No the problem is how to watch a dvd using the lightest most compact way possible .... i.e. a pre-loaded usb stick - but the file format needs to be converted for playback.

In file manager (W7), I just right clicked dvd drive containing the relevant dvd and then selected 'send to' to the drive that contained the usb stick.

After transfer was completed, I removed the dvd, selected drive with usb stick and clicked open. The film replayed exactly as per the dvd original, including menu options and selections available.

When I put the usb stick in the beamer it opened as a file manager, showing many files - which I assume each one represented a chapter.
Clicked the first one, which started to play, with fuzzy sound and picture, made up of many small squares not accurately connecting, although approximate picture could be guessed.

No, I obviously need to use a software application on the first copy from disk to stick.

Ripping a dvd is just the term used for creating a new dvd on a blank writable disk.

I already have the disk, but wanted to transfer it onto a usb stick.
Converting the current file format on the dvd is required so it is readable from the stick, plugged into the beamer. Software program is required for this.

I once had a program called DVD FAB PLATINUM i think. It gave the option : rip to hard drive.
