Using a UK router on Swisscom

I have a working Netgear router (DG834GT) which I want to use instead of my Swisscom Motorola one. I have connected it correctly, but the green ADSL light does not come on. I tried the router settings page (192.168.0.1), but the Netgear setup wizard says "no internet connection detected, check ADSL cable". This is the same Swisscom one (a purple RJ11 to RJ11) from the splitter and filter.
Any ideas what to try? Could the Swiss cable have reversed internal wiring, and the UK router need a different set up?
Thanks for any ideas.

What settings have you put into the router? VPI / VCI, username / password etc?

edit: don't post username and password! Am just interested to know if you've set them

LLC-based,
VPI 8
VCI 35

(these are the settings for CH.)

The user name and password are taken from Swisscom router settings, under "if using a third party router....." They are not the usual ones. Basically, ac_my email address, and a password which goes with this.

On the Netgear Basic Settings page, I get the question "Does your internet connection require a login?" Not sure about that, but I am normally logged in by default. There are different options depending on the answer.

If yes, login and password are needed
If no, account name and domain name (if required)

Encapsulation is either PPPoE or PPPoA. I chose the first option.

The DNS servers, gateway options and IP address are normally added automatically when connected.

Swisscom can help if I sign up to a package to include technical support.

I have spoken with technical support at Swisscom many times and I have never paid anything extra other than our montly fee. We have cancelled Swisscom and have a router for sale which is barely a month old.....in case you need a new router. Have a lot of other Swisscom equipment (some unopened) which we will be selling as well.

Do you have a VDSL service? I don't *think* your modem is compatible with that.

Swisscom is VDSL2 countrywide, not ADSL, so I think you have hit the nail on the head.

The restricted Swisscom firmware and the back doors they put into their routers? I swapped mine out years ago for Fritz!Box, works perfectly. Back to the OP, ADSL routers are not compatible with VDSL2.
