I need an electrician to setup phone line?

Hi there,

Just moved into an apartment.

There is a phone socket installed.

I called Swisscom to setup a fixed line & dsl.

They asked for the previous tenant, so I found out, and then Swisscom say they dont have that person listed.

They then informed me that I would need an electrician to come install the line. Seems like the cannot locate my apartment or something, but I dont understand what the electrician would help with.

I dont understand this at all. What is an electrician going to do? Surely this is something for Swisscom to do (Dont they want new customers?).

Is there another option for internet in Geneva? (Apparently cablecom is not available in my area.. servette).

Do I absolutely need a swisscom phone line, is there another company I can go with?

Thanks,
Alan

Re: I need an electrician to setup phone line?

Normally

The phone installations are already there.

You just need to know who was the last tenant who lived on that appartment and had a fixed telephone line.

So then Swisscom can find out the circuit number and do the connection at the Phone Central.

If the previous tenant didn't had a fixed line ( could be the case, there are some people now that only need cell phones ), then you need to find out who was there before him. Ask the administration company ( "La Regie" ) for the list of the last tenants.

Other possibility is that a previous tenant could have had an ISDN connection installed. In that case the cables need to be reconnected back to the analog line mode.

Only on that case you'd need an electrician.

If the previous tenant didn't have a phone (or only a mobile which is increasingly common nowadays), it's possible that someone has to come in and physically hook up your apartment's phone wiring to the line downstairs in the T&T box. I'd say that's what Swisscom was talking about.

This'll set you back about 150 Fr. (yes, that's nuts).

The electrician is going to check the wires and see exactly what number rings into it. That sounds like nothing, but connect them wrongly at the switchbox in the basement and *presto* you get the neighbor's phone calls.

Swisscom subcontracts this to local electricians, thus avoiding to have their own set-up crews everywhere in the country.

Re: I need an electrician to setup phone line?

Right I see.

Can I get Swisscom to come do this for me?

I dont have time to start rÓnging around electricians and trying to explain what I want them to do.

Seems so crazy, last time I got cable internet installed (not in swizerland), I rang at 4:30pm and at 11am the next day the service guy came, installed everything and I didnt have to pay a penny, plus the first month was free!

Re: I need an electrician to setup phone line?

Have you checked to see if Sunrise offers service in your area?

In Zug, they offer mobile, landline, and internet for a pretty decent
price.

You can call them - but as I said, they don't have crews of their own... so you'll be waiting a long time.

They're pretty used to it, don't worry. Tell them "I want to install my phone line". You won't be the first time they have the request... and

Also check out these guys: http://www.vtx.ch/default_dt.asp

Not available everywhere yet but they've got pretty darn good prices for ADSL 2+ - includes a VoIP phone line.

Anyway - that doesn't change the fact that someone needs to hook up your phoneline.
