Surf at home from Salt

Salt offers a Surf only contract for 35.- a month including modem, internet and TV channels. This could replace a landline/fiber contract.
Does anyone have it? They claim the speed can reach 150Mbits, what's the real rate to expect?

It's cheap because it's crap, as is the customer service.

Re: Surf at home from Salt

If there is no landline connection then I'm not so sure .
Salt are offering the best offers more or less ,but unfortunately the network coverage is not really good
Now around end of the year you can check cable com ,they are no so bad .

Hello I have just found the offer and I became interested too.

The speed, with a good modem and antenna could be pretty decent like 30MB/s (not Mbps, I'm talking of file download speed as seen in Windows). I was using such setup abroad before I moved here. Here in switzerland I used a few times the 5GB fast data from swisscom and it was rather mean at my location, the signal was ~30% on my phone but anyway I could watch youtube in FHD with only few pauses.

Regarding the Salt Surf I wonder if the Zatto TV is on opt-in if you want it of if they activate the Zatto acount for you and you have no choice but add a TV bilag fee on top of it.

I have just checked the swisscom fast 5GB on a few web benchmarks: consistently 19Mbps download / 2Mbps upload. It's lower than what they claim (21/5). Could it be my phone limit...

Hello @zurcherbaby
Please let us know if you took the offer or tested it somewhere.
I gave up for the moment since indeed the customer service is horrible at Salt. I was expecting some difficulties as I speak only english but then why they don't have a clear Terms and Conditions for every offer? The people from the salt stores uttered contradicting statements so in the end it looks as on the many posts about Salt out there.

Did any of you tried this plan at the end? I am also curious whether it actually works or not. Thanks for you feedback!

On the TV side of things they have partnered with Zattoo

Re: Surf at home from Salt

Hi all,
I did take the offer, there was a special offer with Sim card at CHF1 online and with their 6 weeks free return policy, there was no risk in trying. (the Sim card is not included in the return offer, usually costs 40.-)

I'm very happy with the Unlimited Surf at CHF35.-, I get a 4G speed of 3Mo/s inside my flat in Zurich, I hope I can increase the speed with external antennas, the theoretical max being 18Mo/s. The 4G signal is very sensitive to closed windows.

The small Alcatel modem-router that comes with it is quite amazing, it's the size of a mobile phone, receives 4G network up to 300Mb and creates a AC Wifi network. It has a large battery so the idea is you can take it with you a whole day and carry your Wifi with you if needed.

The offer also comes with Zattoo, it's the usual TV channels we get with Cablecom or Swisscom. I bought a Chromecast and I can display it on my TV.

Overall, I paid 35/month for the contract, 19 for the Modem (with 2 year contract, 91 for 1 year contract, 119 no contract), 20 for the Chromecast. I got rid of Cablecom and sealed the plug, 33/month removed from my nebekosten.

That works for me because I live in a 4G covered area.

Re: Surf at home from Salt

VERY GOOD DEAL,

But I paid Full Price for the Router, and 1.99 a day for unlimited
DATA use (prepaid), so if SALT does tits up or gets slow or shit, I can dump
them for another provider.. Hope for the best. expect the worst.
I dislike contract that last 1-2 years, monthly ok prepaid ok..

SALT.CH works for some, but their nuking of the monthly contracts
put them in my bad books..

Cheers

Re: Surf at home from Salt

I'm using this at the moment from an apartment in "outer Adliswil". Key points:
  • Just measured on speedtest: 26/30 Mbit/s down/up (that's on one bar 4G) --- quite enough to watch youtube videos. Sometimes during bad weather, such as bad rain, it switches back to 3G and videos become laggy, but that happened once during past ~2 weeks.
  • The device's battery drains at ~60% per 10 hours (and I couldn't find a way to fine-tune the wifi as was advertised on the Inet).

I'd say that's a good alternative to 1G fiber7 for CHF 65 / month --- I don't really need that much speed. I'm not a webserver.

It works very well at my place although I only receive 2 bars of 4G but it's enough for Apple TV to download movies fast

lol The most useless post in the thread. Doesn´t state if you own the service, the speed, why it is crap, etc...

Thanks everyone else for the detailed review of the service

Hi all,

What is your experience of using Salt Unlimited Internet(35CHF/m) ?
Could you please provide more tech details:
1) Which router is used?
2) Speedtest results?
3) Coverage in rooms?
4) How stable is this Internet connection?

Thanks!

Dmytro

Re: Surf at home from Salt

I have the salt thing as a 3rd backup. It works very well and is fast and reliable. I have upc cablecom 300mb and Swisscom fibre and they are both less reliable and more expensive than salt 4g. Cablecom was so bad I have given notice to cancel it.

I'm also about to decide on a cable provider, so if you're saying that I can watch a streaming video without any hiccup, then I'm sold.
