What high-ish end compact camera do you recommend?

Right now I have a mid range Nikon d7000 and use it with a 55-200 nikkor lens.. It's fine, works good, great shots and I'm used to it..
But thinking to buy something smaller, maybe a canon G1 mk2 .. or Lumix lx100, sony rx100 .. etc. .

Any specific recommendations? I'm flying tomorrow so will be looking in duty free in case there are any bargains.. I'm definitely no pro but want more than a point and shoot.

When i buy one the nikon will be for sale in case any of you want in first

Re: What high-ish end compact camera do you recommend?

The one I would recommend I actually have 1 for sale of, I think it's good but I just never use it! (i am a pro and tend to just lug my big camera)

Fuji X100. The files are lovely, it looks gorgeous and has a lot of options if you want to try something new.

I have only used it a few times and I have the box here staring at me so I'm going to finally sell it.

I am so not an expert but love the Lumix. My step dad used to work mainly with a Mamiya (hope I spell this correctly)

I'm pleased with my several years old x100s. Compact, quiet, excellent low light performance. Downside is the fixed lens - high quality, but no zoom. If you don't think you could adjust to this, maybe look into the fuji x-mount stuff.

they sell a few lenses for them now. Not sure how they attach though, but I saw it on B&H

This one I got last year, you have to check which batch you have on them. I made sure I didn't get a wonky one

I shot with a 5D for many years and stopped using it once I got an X100S. I would recommend the newest iteration, the X100T or get the X100S if you have a good price. I would avoid the original X100 as there are some significant annoyances that they fixed later on.

For me, I shot mostly with 35mm lens, so the X100S was perfect. If you need more flexibility in the lenses, Fuji also do an interchangeable lens X-series: you should look into them. I would recommend them. If you shoot 35mm focal length, then the X100T is basically the perfect camera for you. I was very happy when they released the X100S as it was basically the camera I would have asked them to make if I could spec it up.

To be honest, camera phones are decent enough for a lot of things so I don't carry a camera around all the time. When I do, I often go for the X100S over an SLR or rangefinder simply because of the compactness/weight advantage.

there are varying thoughts. Some say the image processing on the non S is better than on the S. I see debates about them on the photography groups. And you are right the camera phones are getting pretty good! Really depends on what you want to do with them after as well.

Fuji jpg colour profiles are pretty good, so right out of the camera joy.

can you post a link? i haven't seen anything on this. as far as i can see, the X100S is just pure improvement on the X100. I didn't buy the X100 as although it was the right kind of camera I wanted, there were too many irritants. But with the user feedback incorporated in the X100S, Fuji fixed the most important issues and I bought the X100S immediately.

Sadly, I couldn't justify an upgrade to the X100T, but if I didn't already have the S, I would go for the T model.

KR has a small comparison here:

http://www.fujirumors.com/x100s-vs-x100/

I agree the OOC jpegs are pretty good. Another good advantage of fuji's is that they have pretty decent indoor flash exposure algos. I'm not usually a big fan of flash photography, but fuji do a decent job.

EDIT: firmware upgrade also fixes some issues with the original X100. But for me the slow focussing/handling of the X100 make it a non-starter.

I had asked in a few of the FB groups and there was a flicker group too at some point, of course there are varying views on everything photographic.

I did find this after a quick google and it is interesting how the camera image processing is so different, if you shoot RAW though it makes no difference.

http://www.thevisualexperience.org/w...x100-vs-x100s/

The one I got was a special edition one which I am told was one of the last ones and with the "right" firmware. I was a bit unsure and tried to ask around a lot before hand. I just didn't really use it much and will lug out an 5dm3 and L lens instead. (crazy I know )

I didn't even know about the T being out! But you know they tinker with them every so many years to re-introduce them and in turn make more $$.

Re: What high-ish end compact camera do you recommend?

Well I went for a Sony Rx100 mk4.. Huge amount of features in a very small package.. Still working out where to place my fingers!

I considered a leica x4 but learning that nearly all Leicas are rebranded lumix made them feel like a rip off at twice the lumix price. Afraid the shop didn't have a Fuji for me to try.

Re: What high-ish end compact camera do you recommend?

Simply put: What do you use your DSLR for right now?

The Sony RX 100 is great for portraits but for example pretty poor when it comes to macro work... where the Canon G series has always had an edge.

P.S> I have never ever seen a real bargain at an airport duty free when it comes to electronics...

Re: What high-ish end compact camera do you recommend?

Yeah I didn't really get a huge bargain, 700 gbp and filled in the papers to reclaim the 20% vat, plus 50 gbp cashack from Sony..

I'm just a generalist amature, photos of anything but mostly the kids! The DSLR I'm just finding too big to take with me everywhere. Taking 2 young kids out means enough baggage without a big camera around my neck.

I might keep the Nikon but will most likely sell it in a week or two once I get used to the Sony.

Rx100 is a good camera. I hope you enjoy it!

I know what you mean about the Leicas. Although the price difference may not be as bad as first appearances as you could potentially re-coup some of it in re-sale value.

Canon M3 - a friend of mine (who's a professional photographer) swears by it. Has the benefit of being able to use most Canon EF lenses with an adapter. The pictures I've seen from it so far are pretty stunning for such a small camera.
