Re: UPC cablecom "250mbit" internet speed

Check your contract, they don't guarantee what they sell you, they always have a few lines that it will depend on load. I even wrote a python script that will measure the current available speed every few minutes and log it.

Not from cablecom, but it turned out that the time I got back from work was coincidentally the same time others did too. So at night when nobody used it, it was reaching 98% and on peak it would drop to 60%,70%

The key here is how many nodes share the same network, I remember that in the UK NTL had 20 per node and BT 10, here I don't know the numbers.

Re: UPC cablecom "250mbit" internet speed

Cablecom is Power Line /copper cable ( in house ) so it never gets the speeds. Swisscom is pure Glasfaser right to the plug so speed is guaranteed. Sometimes I get even more than what I contracted for.

How come I get 250Mbps on UPC copper? Is this a mistake?

Wrong.

The Swisscom product page always advertises Internet speeds as "up to" a certain value.

Just go to the Swisscom online community and you'll see people complaining that their Internet speed is lower than contracted, or varies depending on the time of day.

Fiber is better than coaxial, sure. But it's not miraculous.

Re: UPC cablecom "250mbit" internet speed

Without Glasfaser I had nothing like the speed I contracted for. They said themselves that over copper wires it could be max 20/5. But with Glasfaser I have the full speed. 100/100.

Re: UPC cablecom "250mbit" internet speed

Our apartment house has regular coax and I get 100/10 with UPC now that I've bypassed my old router.

That's very nice but only possible if you live in an area served by Glasfaser. We don't and The exchange is so far away that the speeds obtained with Swisscom are laughable.
Cablecom is fine for our needs. We get 80-90 download speed.

Re: UPC cablecom "250mbit" internet speed

The speed problem mentioned has nothing to do with the infrastructure, unless you are trying to get the limit which are on the terabits scale. In this case you will need a dedicated line and I don't think those are even commercially available.

It is a business model, if they have 100mb available in a line don't won't sell 10 customers 10mb they will sell 20 customers 10mb or some will sell 40 customers 10b and then do load balancing. People with bigger bandwidth will probably see a bigger drop then people with the most basic plans.

Now with netflix and other online streaming, this sharing may have a strong impact on your bandwidth or if you have a neighbour that loves torrent
