Change of home internet

Hi everyone, I live in Brugg and I have currently cablecom. I pay 71CHF plus the cable connection (which i think is 34chf in the nebenkosten) so 105CHF for their 250mbps.

Sadly Brugg has no fiber. What internet provider would you suggest? I would be interested in sth more than 50mbps and quite cheap. I have seen that Sunrise MTV (we are under 30yo) has their internet package for 55CHF for 100mbps speed. Would you suggest Surnrise or some other provider? And the cost to close the cable connections, should be paid by me or the new provider?

Also, do I need a special permission from the real estate company of my building to close the cable connection or not?

Thanks

Hi, unfortunately without fibre you will not be able to get the 50 or 100 speed, those speeds I believe are for fibre optic capable locations only. cupper cables cant handle that kind of speed.

If I were you, I would call cablecom/UPC and inform them that yo are planning to cancel due to the high price increase over the years, they will not be able to do anything about the nebenkosten but you will see that they are quite receiptable to giving you a discount up to 50% on the monthly fee and at times even a cash credit to your account.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Re: Change of home internet

Well, I checked my address with a link from swisscom and it says that I can have up to real 90/20 which is just a bit lower than the 100/20 sunrise is promising (for households without fiber). So even if I end up getting sth like 60/12, it should be plenty enough for me..

But I live in a very big building with quite strict real estate company and I am thinking that it could be easily the case that they do not want me to seal the cable connection..

In that case, it is probably not worth it to change company just to save 5chf per month and it would make more sense to ask cablecom for a reduction..

The real estate company has no say in this. It is the law. Also there should be no cost for sealing the socket unless you got it unsealed less than one (or two?) years ago.

Ok, then I guess that a phone call to my real estate company should solve everything. For sealing the cable connection, who must I address to?

You pay the connection fee directly yourself to UPC Cablecom?
UPC Cablecom.

You pay the connection fee as part of the rent or Nebenkosten?
Landlord. Sample letter here Please advise about Internet in Switzerland

Note: You can get the socket sealed more or less immediatly, but your subscripted services (Internet/Phone/Extra TV channels) have a cancelation period of around 2 Months (after 12 Month). Time cancelation and sealing accordingly.

Re: Change of home internet

I pay the Kabelanschluss myself and when I called cablecom they offered me six months with no fee for that plus 50% off my subscription for 3 months. I'm not sure what they could do for you if the landlord pays the fee. I reckon as availability of fibre increases either cablecom will have to reduce the cable connection fee or the others might start introducing it. The fact that it's often in the nebenkosten tends to hide the fee though so maybe actually they'll continue to try to rip people off for as long as they can.

Re: Change of home internet

BTW cabelcom expect you to call them instead of writing. You'll then have to endure some of the most desperate sale pitches you've ever experienced.

Be wary about the speeds quoted - I was quoted 80 but I'm getting nearer 30 at best (sometimes less at peak hours). It's still better than I was getting before and appropriate for most things that I do, but a bit disappointing nevertheless.

My 'upgrade' was a couple of weeks ago, so I was leaving it a little while to settle down before calling them to query it, but I don't expect there's much I can do apart from paying for a Swisscom technician to come out and shrug his shoulders
