Price is high, but gen2 devices will be cheaper probably (that's how these things historically go). The development community is ecstatic about it, and I think VR is here to stay.
Judging from the costs of gaming-spec PCs and consoles, the prices are pretty steady across generations.

When you would expect prices to go down due to cost improvements you get the new better performing releases that make it expensive again, etc.

For example PS3 was out, it was like 500$ or whatever, it came down within the same generation to get the slim and more power efficient consoles, and then PS4 came out and we were back at around 500$.
Now of course it goes down, but it stays within the generation and we only get incremental improvements.

So if someone wants to buy cheap, they will still have to buy within gen1, but further down the road a couple of years. Quality will largely be the same for the cheap stuff, and whatever better comes along it will again be expensive.

But the type of people who adopt things like VR early are the people with money to burn on extreme luxuries, they do it willingly to be there at the forefront of new tech.
I have to say, I don't normally burn money on luxuries, but I did pre-order the Rift. I hope Microspot will honor the 498chf price and not cancel the order when it finally does ship. For me it's not about being at the forefront of new tech, it's more about breathing new life into my racing sims.

Little chance of that I reckon Paddy, VR is now here to stay as finally the technology is here to make it happen, and in a few years it will be significantly more advanced.
i think this first generation will be like the original android phone. may be of interest to a few tech nerds but will take many years and iterations before it becomes a mass-market product.

More like a Nokia brick phone, Google and Novartis are already working on printing chips into contact lenses so I guess thats where the future will be

Well i bought the vive with a friend and we shared the price (1050.-) so 525 each. The rift is cheaper but also gives a less immersive experience. About the playstation vr i don't have a clue how will the ps4 handle that, i suppose they will add a bbq feature to their console... Also valve will easly convince AAA studio to produce vr content so i guess it's not a bad choice

"Many years" to become mass market? I doubt it will take so long as the gaming and entertainment industry will drive development over the next few years.

Playstation VR is also not "tech nerd" territory, it IS mass market.

Yeah I think the Vive is the best example of how to do VR at the moment. Where did you buy it from?

I told two friends that i justed bought the htc vive, they asked me what new phone that was.... they are doing apprenticeship of computer scientist juste as me, it clearly shows that this is quite new and that only people that have an interest in vr are informed^^

HTC Vive and Oculuis are for sure more obscure, that is clear as they are expensive PC-gamer-only items, but the GearVR is not (it was also given away free with every S7 pre-order) and the PS4 version will drive VR into the console mainstream. Apple are also reportedly making their own version.

Re: VR Headsets (Gear VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Playstation VR etc etc...)

Could I FINALLY find a girlfriend in this virtual world?

I bet that many of the current internet/handy-junkies will get so immersed in these Worlds, that they won^t want to live in the Real World.

i would not go that far, and right now the majority of the games are small and short, more like minigames. But maybe later... i would not be surprise to find some guy forgetting to drink because of that and die.

If you just want to play around with VR at a very basic level you can order a cardboard device for 15 USD. I bought a V2 Cardboard just to play around and you can get the experience. There are a number of apps and scenarios available

I ordered on the site and it got delivered in about 5 business days and for 15 bucks.... well you can't really beat that. The nice thing is there is also a google VR SDK that you can build your own stuff. I'm having a go at that as well

my question was rhetoric, clearly that doesn't translate on forums

thanks for the link... it look just as good as reality - I wonder how they achieve that (I think sarcasm translates better )

Re: VR Headsets (Gear VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Playstation VR etc etc...)

Anyone have/use the Oculus GO? I know it is obsolete now, but price is low enough to be worth trying. Anyone use it for watching films (or even web browsing? not sure resolution is high enough). I was wondering whether it is perhaps and alternative to getting a big screen/projector?
