Wii not connecting to internet with Cablecom Horizon HD Recorder?

My parents have a second-hand Wii.

They have recently been upgraded to a Horizon HD Recorder by Cablecom.

Since then, they are unable to connect to the internet on the Wii.

The error code given is 51330.

I've looked on the Nintendo website and it talks about checking to see if the router is compatible with a Wii, or checking if MAC filtering is on and, if so, adding the Wii to the list of Mac addresses.

None of us are very technically minded, and the above is so much Greek to us...

Has anyone had a similar problem, or can anyone with better technical skills explain what to do in very, very simple terms?

We are concerned that the issue may be that the Wii is too old to connect to the internet using this fancy new router...

Thank you!

Does your router have a "search for devices" kind of switch (WPS)? That might help find the Wii, and once the router has found it, connect.

A WPS explanation

Re: Wii not connecting to internet with Cablecom Horizon HD Recorder?

My Wii connects fine to my Horizon box.

You need to connect to the 2.4GHz wifi as the Wii won't see the 5GHz one.

Re: Wii not connecting to internet with Cablecom Horizon HD Recorder?

What I would recommend, is hooking up a 2nd router off of the Horizon. Personally, I have good experience with Netgear and Western Digital. In addition to easier hookup (to the wii), via better support software, a 2nd router will also act as a Firewall protecting against the mighty UPC network and the wild wild web.
Another thing you might want to do is turn off the free wifi that every Horizon and wifi modem from UPC has by default. This service is basically using your home as a public wifi hotspot and any walker by can access the internet via your folks Horizon device. Personally, I do mind being so used and have turned wifi completly off on my wifi upc modem. Of course you also give up your right to use the free wifi service (no great loss).

Re: Wii not connecting to internet with Cablecom Horizon HD Recorder?

I don't see what the issue is with leaving the free wifi turned on. Not only is it a separate wifi network not connected with your account in any way, I do find the ability to use everyone else's free wifi when I'm out a big bonus.

You say you "do mind being so used" - why? What is the impact on you - have I missed something?

Also, it means if there's anything wrong with my connection, or even if I'm just rebooting my box, I can connect to the other horizon boxes in my apartment building.

I guess in your case its a good agreement. Personally, I just don't like my living area being used as a hot spot. I prefer to have the choice to only turn on the wifi when it's needed.

Re: Wii not connecting to internet with Cablecom Horizon HD Recorder?

Thank you everyone.

We had a look (trying to put into place some of the solutions suggested above), and in the end we discovered that my dad had been trying to connect using the wrong security connection (or something), and we managed to connect the Wii to the internet and set up Netflix - which was the whole point of the exercise.

Next time if you face the same problem also resetting to factory setting helps.
