Oh the caveat is it requires a 40 Mbit internet connection, guess I need to upgrade my connection first

Re: Swisscom brings UHD TV from today

I'd be interested in seeing how long 4K will take to become ubiquitous enough. Are most current "HD" broadcasts even a full 1080p resolution anyway? They were still 1080i a few years back, though that may have changed.

Which would be great if our advertised 50 Mbit connection could deliver anywhere near that .

Luckily, I'll soon be receiving 1gbit internet via Swisscom too.

Nobody is broadcasting at 1080p on satellite. HD+ over Astra is 1080i, hotbird channels like SRF, and some free German channels are 720p. Swiss TV company SRF have already said they will not invest in 4k TV because it's too expensive. Via the internet there are movie/series providers such as Netflix, sky, BT etc which can be up to 4k but you need a fast internet connection (minimum 25Mb according to Netflix). BBC have also said they will wait with broadcasting TV. What is sure is that at the moment it is all pay on demand or monthly subscriptions.

It is too expensive and pretty much nobody would really benefit from it. I never understood this enthusiasm about 4K. You can't see it, so why pay a premium for it. The only scenario where I think 4K would make sense is VR, as the 4k resolution would be spread around a very wide field of view. This way you can get something close to 720p on the FOV of a normal 16:9 TV.

Re: Swisscom brings UHD TV from today

For sure you can see the difference between 4k content and 1080i/p content! It's a huge step up in detail.

With 4k Blu ray, you add HDR which provides a fantastic wide colour gamut to the picture.

I agree with respect to HDR.

But 4K, no difference in perceptible detail unless you sit way too close to your screen,

or as said before, if the 4k is spread on your screen at 180° or even 360°.

Re: Swisscom brings UHD TV from today

If you can see no perceptible difference between 1080 and 4k from normal viewing distance, then you are have not looked closely enough, or you have very poor eyesight.

Funny, I remember people saying the same thing about the difference between DVD and Blu ray when it was first launched.

Let me challange you on that: you either have exceptionally good eyesight or you are sitting 3m away from a 140" TV.

I think you should be 1 screen size from a 4k display, they are all way too small unless you are watching at your desk

There is some difference on a screen bigger than 50", but if it is worth replacing a very good full hd screen which is a couple of years old is more than questionable. If you're a film buff then sure, go for it, but for the majority who watch mainly normal TV and don't subscribe to a movie provider then it most definitely isn't worth it.

Re: Swisscom brings UHD TV from today

We are talking about TV not PC display.

The Mac display in 4K is 100% better as the normal Mac

Am I missing something? Does this graph say that sitting at 15 feet from the screen, I will only start to see the benefits of 4k if I have a 140 inch screen???

If so, what tosh. Utter and complete nonsense.
