No more SWiSSCOM at EuroAirport

Came across this article regarding Swisscom canceling their phone hub later this month at Basel Airport:

http://www.blick.ch/news/wirtschaft/...id4994573.html

The Swisscom coverage has always been dodgy at BSL for me, so not sure if this will be an improvement or not when forced to roam.

Have had little luck with Wifi too.

And here courtesy of Google Translate:

Swiss telecom companies authorized to operate at the airport Basel-Mulhouse no more mobile base stations. Swisscom and Sunrise gave on Wednesday announced that they have to turn off their mobile networks on the binational Euro Airport May 24,.

Before departure still settle a Facebook post or a selfie when boarding the aircraft still post on Instagram: At Basel Airport, which is located on French territory, which has been possible because Swiss telecom companies previously operating their own antennas. This should soon be concluded.

For months, Sunrise, Swisscom and Salt deliver with the French mobile operators and authorities an intense battle over whether the Swiss mobile phone networks are available at the airport dprfen. A solution was not found. The French side insists on the exclusive use of the frequencies, it was learned on Wednesday.

The problem for the Swiss telecom companies is that the Basel-Mulhouse airport is on French territory. Swisscom was 2004, when drawing up its transmission facilities of the State Treaty of 1949 between France and Switzerland also legitimizes the mobile coverage. Now have shown that this is not the case.

Customers of Swiss telecom operator must be able to call on roaming, if they want to make calls or surf the Euro Airport. The airport has however now a free wifi service which is to be expanded in the future, as the Airport Directorate announced. (SDA / pma

Re: No more SWiSSCOM at EuroAirport

Swisscom coverage at BSL has always been awful (1 or 2 bars and Edge if you're lucky), I fail to see how this will make any difference. Salt on the other hand is consistently good in both France and Germany, with 4G available a km or two from the border.

Done exactly the same thing. Having no signal at all is a lot better than the phone hanging doggedly on to a piece of wet string until you manually change providers.
