Can I get a vpn set up with my Swisscom router?

Hi All

I have a new Swisscom router (small and white) for TV, Internet and phone. I also have a SKY HD box connected to a dish and a contract at my UK address (which has BT broadband). All works fine. I also have a VPN service to use on laptops etc to watch BBC or SKY etc when upstairs in my study or on the move.

We are paying two TV contracts - SKY and Swiss and it ain't cheap! We are thinking of cancelling SKY - which we use mainly for football - and then watching the BT Sport that we get with our UK broadband contract (and currently watch here via our SKY contract) over the internet but on TV. We get BBC and ITV over the Swisscom deal.

Question: Could I set up my router, or get an add on, so I can get my Smart Samsung TV to connect over VPN (or other) to watch BT Sport and possibly other stuff too? I want to keep my Swisscom setup to watch all main UK channels (and Swiss ones).

Hope someone can help?

Enjoy the sunshine

Richard

Re: Can I get a vpn set up with my Swisscom router?

You don't state exactly which router you have but with Swisscom the story is pretty much always the same - NO. If you configure a VPN directly on the router the TV service will stop working. You can set up a VPN server to tunnel in but not establish a client to tunnel out. You can work around this with a DD-WRT or open-WRT compatible device - Cisco, Linksys etc, However that needs to be connected behind the Swisscom router as a second device. It's all a big faff, so we have a Firestick running Kodi.

I have OpenWRT rotuer for sale - perfect for setting up VPN ) (you can also setup routing so basically what traffic goes through VPN and which don't)

Thanks JoeUK. I did suspect that 'interfering' with the swisscom box would likely not work. I am reasonably tech-savvy but you lost me a bit there. So I could get a DD-WRT or open-WRTdevice and I will check that out. I take it that the Firestic/Kodi route is simple access without hiding my location?

Hi Jaceq. I could be interested in your router. Could you explain a bit about it and how I can set it up? I use Strongvpn just now. Thanks

It's simple access. If located in a country with restricted internet access then it's possible to run a VPN on a rooted Firestick or configure to use a proxy.

Hi,

why not just a smartdns service ? One way to simply do it is to switch of the wifi network on the Swisscom router and attach your own router. All you have to do then is to change the dns settings.

Why not just replace Sky with Now Tv subscription ?

Have fun
Martin

Yes in the last year most VPNs seem to regularly get blocked by iplayer anyway and are developing smartdns boltons as the solution.

Having gone Sky free for about a year now, my experience with Sky box was that the quality and ease of use (esp for the other half) of the EPG and recordings etc is worth it vs constant tinkering and the terrible terrible UPC box.

If you are out of contract with Sky, you can probably get a massive discount if you[r brother] suggests he's going to cancel.

Thanks for that. It could be worth trying to cancel my Sky contract and seeing what they give me as a discount but Now TV still costs £30+ I think, I already have all the UK channels bar Skysporst and I still need to sort the vpn access to be able to use it.

Re: Can I get a vpn set up with my Swisscom router?

hi,

Now TV does not cost £30 per month. It is only £7 per month for the entertainment pass. If you want the sports channels you can choose to use a daily or weekly pass for events you want to see you don't need to pay monthly for everything. Also for Movies just pay every so often when you want to watch movies. You can decided how much you pay.

Have fun

Re: Can I get a vpn set up with my Swisscom router?

Hello,

I'm new to Switzerland and will soon be setting up my Internet with Swisscom. I've brought my Buffalo router with me. I believe this is the kind of router referenced in previous posts on this thread that would be able to work in conjunction with or instead of my Swisscom router. Can anyone confirm this? It was previously configured to work as my main router and the VPN was basically always on. If it can work here, would this be an easy set up? If not, does anyone know of a service or contact in the Basel area that could help me with this?

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Re: Can I get a vpn set up with my Swisscom router?

In order to connect a Smart TV, XBOX, Play Station, etc to a VPN connection, you need another router connected to your main router. I am using a small router with a VPN service on it and connected to the original router. This gets the DHCP IP from original. Then i can connect to both wireless routers, i can change the country of the VPN connection, etc. Some service like netflix etc blocks VPN connections.

Regards

Re: Can I get a vpn set up with my Swisscom router?

Bridge your Swisscom router to a secondary router, then add the VPN details in the Control Panel of the second router by logging in. This is very generic and will depend on what make your second router is.
