You can buy a dirt cheap (and legitimate) license key online for $10 from a place like this https://www.electronicfirst.com/gift...ign=allkeyshop

Just need to install a copy of Windows 10 Pro (I recommend first backing up your important data and then doing a fresh install) and then use the license key that you buy from the above link to activate it https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/soft...load/windows10

You can also buy them on eBay for a few quid.

It's just a number you type into a box on your computer, there's not much that can go wrong. As long as you use the official windows 10 installation package from Microsoft, the only bad thing that can happen is that it won't activate and you lost a few quid.

Do you still have the key from the Windows 7 install? That should work (at least it did when I last tried it a couple of months ago).

Re: You can still get Windows 10 upgrade for free if you hurry...

You can get a legitimate "installation" copy of Windows 10 directly from the Microsoft website (and thus avoid potentially virus laden ones from dodgy locations) from over here -> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

The "Download Tool Now" button gives you an opportunity to build a bootable USB stick with the installation files. Although its mentioned that you need an empty USB key with 8GB of free space, I've found that some USB keys sold in shops and advertised as 8GB, may get reported by the tool as not having sufficient space. Better to go with a 16GB USB key to be on the safe side.

Some of the cheaper license keys sold on online markets may be OEM and should be tied to a machine sold by some of the larger vendors (think Dell, HP, etc...). They may work fine, but could get revoked by Microsoft at some point.

Although I have not tested this for some time, you should also be able to use your W7 or W8.1 key to activate a fresh copy of W10. If you have W7/8.1 installed, but do not know your key, then you can also run a command to have it displayed for you. Some third party apps can also retrieve them from the registry. Do be careful when searching for these, some websites may direct you to infected apps or otherwise harm you during the browsing experience.

Yes, I have the package with original Keys, Windows 7 Pro and also Windows 8 Pro, both were OEM version bought from Digitec when I self built the PCs.

You are sure that all your existing software is compatible with Windows 10 ?
I lost access to the user interface of a raid disk manager (although it all still appears to work in the background) and, after a few Windows 10 updates, also access to VMWare 10. For the latter, I found a registry hack to remove it from compatibility check list.

Mostly yes, but I am first backing up stuff, have been behind on my daily/weekly backups I will have to also go through rubbish data that I don't need any more, it is just eating up space.

I just did this recently when I bought a new computer with Win10 home pre-installed. I forget exactly what steps I did (you can google it) but basically I put in my key from the old W7 CD. The first time it said not a valid key, but the second time it took it.

I read on one site that you can't keep using the same key for multiple computers, that the upgrade is only valid for one computer. There's some sort of key info about your computer that Windows keeps so it knows this version of Win10Pro is for this computer. So if you buy another computer a few years down the line, supposedly the key won't work on that.

Re: You can still get Windows 10 upgrade for free if you hurry...

While the free upgrade program seems to be closed, using any legit windows key seems to work on a fresh install. I recently used Windows 7 ultimate key on a fresh clean install of Windows 10 and it activated as Windows 10 Pro

Before you clean the drive, retrieve the license key from the OS
for example using this method:

Re: You can still get Windows 10 upgrade for free if you hurry...

I would never have Windows 10 again if you paid me. A couple of months after I bought a new laptop in 2015 I was offered a free upgrade to Windows 10 so I installed it. Huge mistake, it was exasperating to use the whole 3 years I put up with it. I got fed up of constant huge updates, my laptop disconnecting from the internet when I was in the middle of something and the annoyance of Windows 10 not being able to connect to my printer.

You can easily block/pause updates for 7 days etc. I have it on my Windows Surface Pro and it seems ok to me. The only thing I don't like is the added fluff.
Maybe the printer was not supported by Windows 10?

Re: You can still get Windows 10 upgrade for free if you hurry...

Thanks to Gravity for the Product key link.
It works like a charm with the registry method. The CMD prompt showed nothing on my W10 Pro PC.

Of course before starting any update, make sure you have backed up all your data and make sure the components on your older computers will run with W10 otherwise you will be searching for drivers that may or may not exist, (personal experience with regards to the drivers) or replace components. There are numerous websites that can help as well as digging thru the MS W10 specifications here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wind...ions#primaryR5

The digital key for the original Windows SW is registered with Microsoft. That means if you have a Win7 / 8 / 10 Home version installed you can only clean install, (no bloatware) a Home version with the Media creation tool.
With the Media creation tool you do have the choice of 6 or 7 different versions of Win10, home, pro, N, server etc. You will get an error message if you try to install Pro on a previous Home.
I have done a number of updates /clean install of W10 home and pro for my PC and several notebooks, (personal and friends) without any real problems.
The Win10 installation routines run smoothly and touch wood, I have had no problems with about 12 installations.

Here is a link to the tools. You can download to your PC/Notebook and either burn an ISO CD/DVD or create a bootable USB stick, (minimum size 16GB).

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/soft...load/windows10

The Surface Pro4 and a Surface 5th gen were a slightly different kettle of fish but with a little digging on line the clean installs of W10 Home on the 4 and W10 Pro on the 5th gen went smoothly with no problems.

- Marcus

Re: You can still get Windows 10 upgrade for free if you hurry...

Just letting you all know that I nuked my C: HD, then used a 16GB USB flash stick with Win10 downloaded from Microsoft website.

Booted from the USB stick and ignored the MS Product Key input section (I used, don't have the key option). I then picked Win 10 Pro as install option from the drop down menu of various flavours. All was going ok but at around 11% mark I got-

"Windows cannot install the required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070022"

If that happens to you then just reboot and this time do not remove partitions and just install it on the biggest partition which the previous setup created. It fixed the problem.

Once everything was set up, I used my old Win7 Pro key (OEM DVD pack) to activate the brand new Win 10 Pro installation. All went through perfectly

Thanks for all the replies.

EDIT- Short conclusion: Old Win7 key still works if you want to upgrade to Win10.

I got rid of Windows in the end as my OH bought me a Mac Mini and a new monitor. He's a software developer and loathes all Windows products, never uses them. He took my laptop, first thing he did was get rid of Windows and he's now running Linux Manjaro on it.

On my very old laptop I installed windows 10 without any key and so far everything works fine just that I have something like "register your version of Windows" in a very light watermark in the corner of the screen.
