Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

So I got an Echo Dot at the weekend and after setting it up, it took literally a couple of minutes to get it communicating with lamps etc via openHab2.

Openhab has a Hue emulation service so I just needed to install the service (one click), turn on pairing, use the Echo settings screen to auto-discover the devices and that was it.

It's all seamless in operation - for example, "Alexa, turn on the table lamp".

Much, much easier than I thought it would be.

And, if you are a Trekkie.....

Our dear friend Jeff added a new wake word option for our Echos . Yes we can now change Alexa out for "Computer" . Now we can all play at being Captain Kirk. Computer , read me my book..."" Computer calculate Pi to 11 million digits "

Also of note is a new skill , called Beer Snob . Yep , just ask about a beer , and Alexa will give you chapter and verse on it..... Just in case you forgot that Chimay Bleue is 9% , unlike that Budweiser you are drinking.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Does anyone out there have an Echo registered on Amazon.de ? Is the Lightify Skill available yet ? The Lightify support team told me it's still "under maintenance "...... But a friend sent me a screengrab from the Alexa App that shows the skill , so I am rather confused.

Thanks

On/Off and Dim are easy. It colours, scenes that are the tricky part . For example Philips Hue Scenes are very, very hit and miss with Alexa...

I don't think my bog-standard ikea lamp bulbs are going to change colour whatever I do to them.

They are with G-Home too to be fair. I wonder if Philips have some in built resistance to non-Philips products.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

I notice Alexa drops the ball from time to time. I don't know if it is Echo, or the target sends back an empty result. One would think she would come back with a debug explanation.

I don't think it would be that difficult with my set up:

Create a 'virtual' switch for Alexa to discover (with a name like "Dinner Scene").
Set some rules in OpenHab:
(when switch is on, do this and this...)
(when switch is off, do this and this...).

Then you just say, "Alexa, turn on Dinner scene".

I got some functions of my media server working with Alexa too.

"Alexa, turn on TV mute" will mute the volume. I suppose it's a bit clumsy to say but with the Dinner scene, you could put a film on pause automatically with a rule.
We don't have a TV but I'm really not sure what to call Kodi (running on a raspberry Pi) set up with a Sony sound system and a biggish monitor linked to a media server to play films etc.

It's something like 70 Euro here. Why should I pay anything for something can already have for nothing?

Most of it - but be aware that Swiss addresses can't be used for local content (such as weather, Uber, local search etc.). If you need that, you'll have to go with a Google Home, which supports everything in Switzerland. One of the big downsides for the Google Home, IMO, is the shopping list app. It only works with Google Keep, which has proven to be very unreliable, doesn't really sync and always needs an internet connection to work (which sucks if you're in EDEKA in Konstanz, where there's no sufficient mobile signal). as the shopping list is pretty much the number one tool that we use on it apart from controlling the light etc., my wife is more or less making us move back to Alexa. Also, "ok google" is going on my nerves, to be honest. They should really introduce a choice of activation words.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Pretty sure Plex is Freemium; you can pay for the Pro version. You might also want to check out Infuse.

I don't use either, but I see Infuse a lot on the www.firecore.com site as I used Firecore to jailbreak my ATV2 and still use their forums occasionally.

good luck.

Yup as Fduvall says, free, but if you want offline syncing, to watch on a plane (as well as some other stuff), you have to pay a monthly/yearly/one-time fee.

I have paid it, I think Plex is great and sharing my library with my parents is incredibly useful.

Yes you can as the Echo does not verify your location using your IP Address.

You won't be able set Home location as Zurich though. Use a nearby German address to get a semi accurate Home weather forecast

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

So I got an NVIDIA Shield the other day, it now seems that it has (sort of) integrated Google Home / Assistant, and offering Dot like modules to place all over your house called "Spots".

Anyone tried these? I guess they are similar enough to G-Home and the Shield will be used as a sort of upgraded Chromecast?

EDIT: I'm an eejit, they haven't been released yet, but might be an interesting concept!

Although you can't actually play music on your Echo with it. You need a networked player/speaker combo too.
